Oh, what wonders and marvels!
Let him exclaim: Oh, what wonders!
When he sees in this place
Nothing but the meadows of the highlands.
No, not from Ghouta
Without those noble ones,
No, not Qarmatians
Buying anything but sandals.
All these confused beings
Calling the houses to play,
Yearning takes me, confused,
So the inability of a growing boy takes me away.
What do people say about
One who strayed from the abode of fragrance?
Or how can the stomach of
An Arab bear the skull of an eagle?
Who will give me a water-pipe to sip?
With the softness of down.
Who will give me a meadow tent
In my night of domes?
Who will give me a family
Of these aeons in my dwelling?
By your life, this is the way of one
Who is silent, and this is my wandering.
