1. أرى القول يحلو بذكر الرجال

    وليس بذكر ذوات الدلال

    I see that speech is made sweet by mention of men,

    And not by mention of the graceful maidens.

  2. رجال السياسة والأمر والنهى

    أهل الكياسة أمثال عالي

    Men of politics, command and prohibition,

    Men of wisdom, the likes of the eminent.

  3. لقد قلت في مطلع القول حسنا

    واذ قلت بالشبه ساء مقالي

    I began my speech well,

    But when I made comparisons, my words turned foul.

  4. لان الذي رمت مدح علاه

    بدا في المعالي بدون مثال

    For he whom I intended to praise,

    Appeared through virtues peerless and unrivaled.

  5. وزير يشد به الملك ازرا

    مشيرا لارائه النجح تال

    A minister who strengthens the king,

    Advising him, and success follows his counsel.

  6. اذا رام امرا امر عليه

    نحبيحا يذلل صعب المنال

    When he desires a matter, it happens,

    Smoothly attaining the difficult goals.

  7. فيقتار كل شرود ويدنى

    بعيد الاماني الى كل بال

    So he chooses each appropriate course,

    And brings distant hopes to every mind.

  8. واقلامه السمر من فوق بيض الصحائف

    تفعل فعل العوالي

    His brown pens upon the white paper

    Act like the lofty deeds.

  9. يذل لها كل عاص وتعنو

    لامرتها ماضيات النصال

    They humble every rebel and aim at him

    Their arrows like well-honed blades.

  10. تدبر ملكا بعيد النواحي

    وتفصل بالحق كل عدال

    He manages a far-reaching kingdom

    And judges with complete justice.

  11. وتعمر للاصدقاء بيوتا

    واما بيوت العدى فخوالي

    He builds homes for friends,

    While enemies' homes become desolate.

  12. يرى في العواقب ما غيره لا

    يرى في حوادث ماض وحال

    He sees in consequences what others cannot,

    And in past and present events what is hidden.

  13. فللبر بحر وللعلم حبر

    وللملك صدر رشيد الفعال

    For kindness he is an ocean, and for knowledge a sea,

    For the kingdom, a sincere and active heart.

  14. حميد الخصال سعيد الخلال

    وحيد المعالي فريد الكمال

    Praiseworthy in qualities, felicitous in purity,

    Unique in grandeur, unmatched in perfection.

  15. تبارك من اودع الخير فيه

    ونزهه عن عيوب الرجال

    Blessed is He who instilled good in him,

    And protected him from the flaws of men.

  16. فما يزدهيه اقتدار وعز

    ولا ما لمنصبه من جلال

    Neither power nor glory makes him vain,

    Nor the majesty of his office.

  17. ولا نول مال ولا طول حال

    ولا مجد آل ولا سعد فال

    Neither accumulating wealth nor lasting fortune,

    Neither ancestral glory nor stellar fate.

  18. اذا ما تحدى علاه امير

    فان هو الا غوى الخيال

    If an emir challenges his eminence,

    He is but a lost phantom.

  19. سل الحرب عنه وان شئت

    فالسلم فهو لكلتيهما ذو حوال

    Ask warfare about him, or if you wish,

    Peace, for in both he is masterful.

  20. الم يأن للروم ان يبصروا ما

    تجليه فكرته في الليالي

    Has not the time come for Romans to see

    What his intellect makes clear in the nights?

  21. الم يك في زجره من نذير

    يحذرهم امرهم في المآل

    Is there no warner in his warning

    Cautioning them of their precarious state?

  22. الم يك في بشره من بشير

    يحلهم في امان الموالي

    No herald in his tidings

    Securing them in loyalty's refuge,

  23. ويسكنهم في مساكن امن

    على النفس والمال ثم العيال

    And housing them in safe abodes

    For self, wealth and family?

  24. اليس لهم ما لنا وعليهم

    سوى ما علينا هدى كل وال

    Do they not have what we have

    Except guidance, each clan's protector?

  25. امن بعد هذا المقال مراء

    وعادي جلاد وداعي جدال

    After this discourse, is there still doubt

    And a contentious slanderer inviting strife?

  26. الام الخداع ولا خير فيه

    وكم ذا تروغون روغ الثعالى

    Deceit brings no good,

    How oft have you acted like sly foxes!

  27. فطورا تقولون انا عداة

    وطورا تقولون انا موالي

    One time claiming to be enemies,

    Another claiming amity.

  28. وحتام تبغون منا امورا

    وتقترحون نوال المحال

    Yet you definitely seek from us things

    And propose impossible gains.

  29. اكنتم رجالا وكنا نساء

    لحمل اغتيال لكم واختيال

    If you were men and we were women,

    You could bear such guile and scheming!

  30. لقد ساء والله ما قد زعمتم

    وان هي الا مهاوى الضلال

    By God, your claims are disgraceful,

    Nothing but pitfalls of misguidance!

  31. اطيعوا الخليفة بالحق واخشوا

    صوارمه فهي ذات اغتيال

    Obey the Caliph in truth and fear

    His swords - they readily strike.

  32. اذا اعملتها كمة شداد

    ارتكم ما لم يمر ببال

    When the fierce calamity moves them,

    It leaves you with no trace.

  33. منايا سراعا تدور عليكم

    رحاها وانتم لها كالثفال

    Deaths come upon you quickly

    While you stand before them like lambs.

  34. اليس لعبد العزيز مليك الملوك

    جيوش كعد الرمال

    Does Abdelaziz, king of kings, not have

    Armies as countless as sand grains?

  35. اذا كان يدعو رعاياه طرا

    يقولون لبيك يا للنزال

    When he calls his subjects to battle,

    They say: "We obey, into the fray!"

  36. خليفة رب العباد مفيض الايادي

    السوائل قبل السؤال

    Caliph of the Lord of servants, endowed with generosity,

    Bestowing gifts before being asked.

  37. رؤوف بمن جاه مستجيرا

    ولكن شديد على ذي المحال

    Merciful to one seeking refuge,

    Yet stern toward the impossible demander.

  38. وينصره الله نصرا عزيزا

    على كل باغ مريد القتال

    God grants him glorious victory

    Against every belligerent warmonger.

  39. فخير لكم ان تكونوا كآبا

    ئكم في حماه المديد الظلال

    So best for you is to be as your fathers

    Under his extending, shady protection.

  40. فليس لكم دونه من ودود

    فلا يغررنكم مين قال

    You have no dearer friend than him,

    Let no smooth-talker deceive you.

  41. وليس لكم غيره من ملاذ

    ولو كنتم في اعز الجبال

    You have no refuge but him,

    Even were you on the highest peaks.

  42. وما لكم دونه من معاذ

    فلا يغوينكم ذو خبال

    No shelter from him,

    So let no deluded one mislead you.

  43. تعالوا الى ما دعاكم اليه

    وان هو الا خلوص امتثال

    Come to what he has called you,

    Nothing but sincere obedience.

  44. وانتم منه منه في امان

    وعيش هنئ وغبطة حال

    With him you are safe,

    And live in bliss and fortune.

  45. فكم مرة قال اني بر

    باهل الصليب كاهل الهلال

    How oft has he said that he is kind

    To the people of the Cross like the Crescent!

  46. فما لكم لا تعون حديثا

    ولا تهتدون بنصح مقال

    Why do you not heed advice

    Or follow counseled reason?

  47. اعز السلاطين قدرا وجاها

    واكرمهم عند بذل النوال

    The greatest sultan in rank and glory,

    The most generous when bestowing gifts.

  48. وارأفهم بالعباد فوادا

    واحلمهم عن مسيء مغال

    The most compassionate to servants,

    The most forbearing toward the offensive.

  49. لطالب رضوانه كل خير

    وطالب عصيانه في وبال

    For the seeker of His good pleasure, all bounty,

    The obstinate - misery and torment.

  50. فعد قوافي الثناء عليه

    نجوما لسعدك دون زوال

    Make rhyming his praises

    Stars for your fortune eternally fixed.

  51. وصيد حماه محط الرحال

    وعز الذلال وكنز النفال

    The aim of aspirations, treasure of spoils.

    What state rivals his in South, East or West?

  52. فهل مثل دولته في الجنوب

    وفي الشرق والغرب او في الشمال

    What peer of his lofty origin?

    Gracious, noble and majestic in mien.

  53. وهل مثله من جميل مهب

    اصيل حسيب جليل بجال

    He awes above the throne and battle,

    On the day of fortune and day of strife.

  54. يروعك فوق الاريكة والطرف

    يوم النوال ويوم النضال

    God supports him in private and public

    And grants him victory with sharpened swords.

  55. له الله في السر والجهر واق

    وينصره بالسيوف الصقال

    May his enemies remain like dust,

    And the sun of his beginnings perfected!

  56. ودامت اعاديه مثل الهباء

    وشمس مطالعه في كمال
