1. أرى الدهر صافاني ومال إلى الصلح

    ومن بعد حرماني أتاني بالنُجح

    I see time being kind to me and leaning towards reconciliation

    After depriving me, it brought me success

  2. وأصغي إليَّ الجد حين دعوته

    ولاحت تباشر المنى لي من صُبحي

    And it listened to me seriously when I called upon it

    The wishes started dawning upon me from the morning

  3. أتاني على الإبحار والبرّ برّه

    بأسرع من شكوى احتياجي إلى السمح

    It came to me on land and sea, more quickly

    Than my complaining of need for forgiveness

  4. فلم تكُ إلا دعوة فأجابني

    إجابة صنو وهو لي سيد لحّ

    So it was just a prayer that it answered me

    An answer of support while it is for me a generous lord

  5. ولو لم يجرني من زماني بفضله

    لأصبحت في بؤس وأمسيت في برح

    Had it not pulled me in my time with its favor

    I would have woken up in misery and slept in distress

  6. وحنت بأشجاء التمني فإن لي

    لجرحا ممضاً دونه ألم الجرح

    And I would have yearned with heartache, for I have

    A painful, incurable wound beyond the pain of wounds

  7. فلي في نهار جهد سبح وحرفة

    وفي ليلتي حبس وحُرف عن السبح

    So I have, in my day, swimming and work

    And in my night, confinement and diversion from swimming

  8. إذا كنت لا أشكو إليه فمن عسى

    يكون إليه مشتكى الضرّ والتَّرح

    If I do not complain to Him, then who can possibly

    Be the one I complain to, of harm and affliction?

  9. ومن ذا الذي تلقاه في الناس مسجحاً

    سواه إذا اضطر المضيم إلى السجح

    And who else do people find welcoming

    Except Him, when the oppressed is in need of beseeching

  10. خلائق لا يوفي الثناء بوصفها

    ولو كنت حسّان البلاغة والفصح

    Creatures whose praise cannot be fulfilled even if I were

    The most eloquent in rhetoric and articulate speech

  11. أغار على أوصافه الغر أنها

    تشاركها أوصاف آخر في المدح

    I am jealous that their attributes are described as strange

    That other attributes are associated with them in praise

  12. هداني له جدّي وقد كنت غاوياً

    مع الشعراء البائرين ذوي الكسح

    My grandfather guided me to Him when I was lost

    Among the immoral poets of little dignity

  13. وكان زماني مازحاً فمزحته

    فلما تعاطى الجدَّ ملت عن المزح

    My time was playful so I played with it

    But when it got serious, I stopped joking

  14. فصار لشعري رونق وطلاوة

    وحُقَّ له الإملاء في ملأ فصح

    So my poetry gained splendor and eloquence

    And it deserved his inspiration in prime eloquence

  15. وقد كان في سوق الأعاجم كاسداً

    مقالي واطرائي عليهم بلا ربح

    While in the market of non-Arabs it was worthless

    My words and praises upon them without profit

  16. فكم بتُّ أُنضي خاطري لمديحهم

    فقمت وبي رنح وأعييت كالطلح

    How many times did I exert my mind praising them

    Then I got up tired like withered branches

  17. ولم يغن عني ما مدحتهم به

    فتيلاً وما ازدادوا سوى البخل والشح

    What I praised them with was no use to me

    They only increased in stinginess and meanness

  18. ولم ينقدوا كفارة الكذب الذي

    عليّ بأعلى اللوح ما هو بالممحي

    And they did not pay the penalty for the lies

    Written above with what cannot be erased

  19. ولو أنني راسين عصري فيهم

    وملطن ما استحققت منهم سوى النشح

    Had I been like poets of my time praising them

    I would not have deserved from them but scraps

  20. فها أنا ذو ربح ولست بمفتر

    ثناء وإطراء وكنت بها أُلحي

    So here I am, in profit and not lying

    In praise and flattery when I used to beg

  21. فحل يا زماني بين فوزي ومطلبي

    أن أسطعت واستعدى الخطوب على فدحي

    O my time, the choice between my success and purpose

    Is when I shine and calamities attack my struggle

  22. فلي باسمه استفتاح كلّ قضية

    ويمناه اقليد السعادة والفتح

    So in His name I start every issue

    And with His blessings I hold happiness and opening

  23. ألا فليزرني اليوم من كان مزرياً

    بشأني يجد كوخي اعزَّ من الصرح

    Indeed, let whoever derided me in my condition

    Find my hut more honorable than a palace

  24. علا بمعاليه مقامي ورتبتي

    وصرت إلى أقصى الأماني ذا طمح

    With his virtues, my status and rank became high

    And I reached the utmost wishes and aspiration

  25. إذا أبصرت عيناي من هو مخفق

    كدأبي من قبل انتحلت له نصحي

    Whenever my eyes see one who is suffering

    Like I used to, I offer him my advice

  26. وقلت له أبشر بما أنت طالب

    فمن يدع يوماً باسمه فاز بالسنح

    And I say to him, rejoice in what you seek

    Whoever one day calls upon His name wins easily

  27. هو الماجد النائي مدى الدهر صيته

    قريب من الداعي على القرب والنزح

    He is the glorious, whose fame is endless

    Near to the caller, in closeness and approach

  28. فليس علي بعد يؤخر رفده

    وليس على قرب يمل من المنح

    I am not too far for Him to delay His help

    Nor is He too near to tire of gifts

  29. هو الحازم النحرير طلاّع أنجد

    كريم نزيه النفس ذو خلق سجح

    He is the decisive helper, a protector

    Generous, of pure soul, with a gentle nature

  30. مليك أجلّ الخلق سامي الذري الذي

    مناقبه الغرَّاء تغني عن الثرح

    The most noble of people, of high lineage

    Whose virtues eliminate the need for wounding

  31. أميري ومولاي الكريم وسيدي

    ومن هو بعد اللّه لي سند الركح

    My lord, master, generous patron

    And after God, the pillar of my strength

  32. تظنّيت فيك الخير والفضل كله

    فحققت ظني فهو دوني في صح

    I expected all good and favor from You

    And You fulfilled my hopes, truly so

  33. أتاني وعد عنك إنك منزلي

    لديك كما أنزلت أهلي في ندح

    You came to me with a promise that You will host me

    As You hosted my family in comfort

  34. ولا ريب عندي أن وعدك منجز

    وأني لا أحتاج معه إلى فسح

    I have no doubt that Your promise will be fulfilled

    And that with it, I need no more space

  35. فهاك مني المدح خدمة مخلص

    فجد بالرضى عنه فديتك والصفح

    So here is my praise, an act of loyalty

    Please accept it, my life is yours to spare

  36. ودم كهف عزَّ للذليل وملجإ

    لقاصده ما انجاب ليل من الصبح

    A generous cave of honor for the disgraced

    And shelter for its seeker however the night covers the dawn
