1. وَجدٌ لَهُ في الحَشا دَبيبٌ

    يُشفق مِن حَرِهِ اللَهيبُ

    He finds solace in seclusion,

    Shielded from the scorching blaze.

  2. وَغلة ما لَها شِفاءٌ

    وَعلة ما لَها طَبيبُ

    An ailment with no remedy,

    A sickness lacking any sage.

  3. ما ترك الشَوق وَالتَنائي

    مِني سِوى مَدمع يَصوب

    Naught remains of my longing, save

    A tear aiming for the eye.

  4. تَنفسي لِلعَليل علَّ ال

    عَليل يَرتاح يا جُنوب

    My breath fans the ailing - may

    The ailing find comfort thereby!

  5. سَقاكَ يا عَهدَنا وَحيا

    كَ بِاللَوى عارض سَكوب

    Age withered our life, till it

    Was struck by disasters' flood.

  6. أَعائِدٌ عَيشَنا الرَطيب

    فَرُبما أَخصب الجَديب

    Our blessed life may yet return Should the rain make the land bud.

    The meadows of youth still so green And where passion once burned, now frigid.

  7. أَيام رَوضُ الشَباب غضٌّ

    وَحَيث بَرد الهَوى قَشيب

    When his lips intoxicate with wine,

    Aged wine, like syrup, so lympid.

  8. إِذ يُسكر الشُرب وَالحَميا

    مِن فَمِهِ الشادن الرَبيب

    He tilts the cup of erudition -

    The saliva it meets grows rancid.

  9. يُدير كاس الآداب صَرفاً

    وَالراح مِن رِيقِهِ يَشوب

    His frame, lips and cheek sublime,

    The full moon, a pearl and blade rigid.

  10. القَد وَالثَغر وَالمَحيا

    البَدر وَالدُرّ وَالقَضيب

    His angry glance makes me shake,

  11. يَروعني لَحظَة الغَضوب

    كَأَنَّهُ صارِمٌ مُهيب

    Like a ruthless sword so lucid.

    Alone, bemoaning my passion,

  12. إِذا خَلَونا بِلا رَقيبٍ

    أَشكو هَواهُ فَلا يَجيب

    He won't acknowledge my bid.

    Arise Samer, we shall complain of longing,

  13. قُم نَشتَكي الشَوق يا سَميري

    فَأَنتَ وافي الهَوى تسيب

    For you understand love forbid.

    The friends are gone, time wears a frown,

  14. بانوا وَوَجهُ الزَمان طَلق

    فَصارَ في وَجهِهِ قَطوب

    Its face now wrinkled and rigid.

    No boon companion, nor loyal friend,

  15. فَلا نَديمٌ وَلا صَديقٌ

    وَلا أَنيسٌ وَلا حَبيب

    Nor intimate nor beloved.

    A heart ransom itself would pay,

  16. يَفديك قَلبٌ لَهُ وَجيب

    في جَسَد كُلُهُ نَدوب

    A body that's all wounds livid.

    Some hopes do still attend on me,

  17. تَحضر لي بَعضُهُ الأَماني

    وَالشَوق عَني بِهِ يَغيب

    While longing itself lies rigid.

  18. أَظن أَن قَد نَسيت عَهداً

    لَم يَنسهُ المُدنف الكَئيب

    I feel he has forgotten a bond

    The melancholic cannot rid.

  19. وَقَد مَنَحتُ الأَغيار قُرباً

    وَإِن قُرب المُريب حَوبِ

    I draw strangers near me, but lo,

    Dubious intimacy's forbidden!

  20. وَلَيسَ يَجفي المُحب شيءٌ

    وَظَنَ أَهل الهَوى يَصيب

    No slight escapes a lover's heart,

    And the heartsick never mis-read.

  21. قُلوبُهم كُلَها عُيون

    وَكُلُ أَجسامِهُم قُلوب

    Their hearts are all eyes;

    Their bodies entirely hearts spread.

  22. وَمَن يَكُن عاشِقاً عَفيفاً

    تَكاد تَبدو لَهُ الغُيوب

    He who loves with honor pure

    Can almost see what is hidden.

  23. قَد يُرزَق الشَيء غَير عان

    وَيحرم الطالب الأَريب

    One gains things unhoped sometimes,

    While the hopeful is forbidden.

  24. ما ذاقَ صَفو الدَنا فَصيح

    وَرُبَما ملَّهُ حَبيب

    Whoever the world's sweetness never tasted

    May one day be tired by his beloved.

  25. وَما تَصدى حَرٌّ لِأَمر

    إِلّا أَتَت دونَهُ الخَطوب

    No ordeal is without its relief -

    This is a truth that can't be undid.

  26. لا تَطلُبنَ عِلة لَحظٍ

    قَد أُبهِمَ الأَمر بِالبيب

    Seek no sense in a glance,

    For the look itself explains what is hid.

  27. وَمُضمر في حَشاهُ ضَغناً

    يَذيعُهُ لَحظُهُ المُريب

    His calm smile hides an anger

    His ambiguous glance shows forbid.

  28. يَسوم وِدي بِالمال جَهلاً

    وَكبرهُ دونَهُ رَقيب

    He woos my love with presents, but

    Greed is the guardian that lies amid.

  29. هَيهات ذل القَنوع يَوماً

    ما النجم مَن لامسَ قَريب

    The free shall never bow in baseness!

    No star dust touches one earth-rid.

  30. لا يَستَطيب الحَيوة حرٌّ

    إِذا اِستَرَقَ الهزَبر ذيب

    The freeman tastes not life's joy

    When his front tooth extraction he did.

  31. قَد يَملك الحَر بابتسام

    وَلا يَرى بَشَره قُطوب

    The freeman may own a smile,

    Yet his face shows no dimples amid.

  32. وَالمال ما لَم تَهبهُ آل

    وَالقوت عَنهُ إِذاً يَنوب

    Wealth is naught, if not granted by God -

    So food takes its place, when wealth is forbid.

  33. أَقسَمت بِالعيسَ كَالحَنايا

    قَد شَفها السَير وَالسهوب

    I swear by the fir, so stoic -

    The journey and plain it crossed arid.

  34. يَحملنَ ميل الطَلى نَشاوى

    مِن السَرى مسهم لَغوب

    They carry the nomad's banner,

    A shot from the bowstring so rapid.

  35. حَتّى أَلموا بِالبَيت شَعثاً

    وَخصت عَنهُمُ الذُنوب

    Until they reached home all dusty,

    Sin itself now from them slid.

  36. إِن العُلا أَصبَحَت خَلاءً

    فَالحُرُ بَينَ الوَرى غَريب

    Indeed the exalted now lie waste -

    The freeman's a stranger amid men forbid!
