1. يا مُكثِراً مِن ذَم كُل ذَميم

    أَبدأ بِنَفسِكَ قَبل كُل مَلومِ

    O you who denounce all the vile,

    Begin with yourself before blaming others.

  2. قَد يورث التَعنيف إِصراراً وَقَد

    يَتَكَسَر المُعوج بِالتَقويم

    Rebuke may breed stubbornness, yet

    The crooked may be straightened with guidance.

  3. هَل تَنجَع الآداب عِندَ مَعاشر

    مَع زهدهم في العلم وَالتَعليم

    Are morals of use to a people

    Who shun knowledge and education?

  4. كَم حكمة عِندَ الغَبيّ كَأَنَّها

    رَيحانَة في راحة المَزكوم

    What wisdom in a fool but like

    A sweet basil on a dunghill!

  5. بَسمت مَحاسنها لِوَجه كَالح

    ما أُضيع المِرآة عِند البُوم

    Its beauties smile for a face that's like

    A mirror not wasted on the blind.

  6. كانَ المُلوك تُجار فَضل عِندَهُم

    قَلم البَليغ أَعَز مِن إِقليم

    Kings prized the merit of eloquence;

    A skillful pen was dearer than a realm.

  7. وَالحُكم كانَ لِأَجَل ذَلِكَ في ذَوي

    هِمَم مَوكلة بِكَشف هُموم

    Rule was for this entrusted to the capable

    Whose lofty aspirations resolved problems.

  8. ثُمَ اِنطَوى ذاكَ الزَمان وَأَهلَهُ

    طَيّ السجلّ الطاهر المَختوم

    Then time and its people passed away,

    The page of glory sealed and confirmed.

  9. وَتَغاير المُعتاد فينا واِنقَضَت

    دُول الكِرام وَسادَ كُل لَئيم

    Normalcy changed amongst us, the rule

    Of the honorable ceased, and baseness spread.

  10. فَكَأَنَّما خَطَط المَعالي بَعدَهُم

    شَقق خَلَت مِن رَونَق التَسهيم

    It was as though, after their era,

    Splits appeared devoid of fair alignment.

  11. أَنضى الَّذي طَلَب الكِرام مِطية

    وَانبث بَينَ رَواسم وَرُسوم

    The seeker of esteem mounted his steed

    And roamed between milestones and ruins.

  12. هَذا وَما اِنفَرَد المُلوك بِجورهم

    كَم في الوَرى مِن ظالم مَظلوم

    Not only kings were unjust in their rule—

    How many in the world are oppressor and oppressed!

  13. لَو جاءَنا المَهديّ لَم يُوجد لَنا

    طَوق امرءِ إِلّا بِكَف غَريم

    Were the Mahdi to come to us, he'd scarcely find

    Any man's neck free of an enemy's grasp.

  14. قَد يَشتَكي الحُرّ الخَطوب وَرُبَّما

    كانَ التَأوّه راحة المَكلوم

    The freeman may complain of woes, yet

    Moaning may relieve the anguished.

  15. سُكر الزَمان فَعربَدَت أَيامُهُ

    سُكر اللَئيم عَذاب كُل نَديم

    An age intoxicated, its days

    Drunken; the scourge of all companions.

  16. وَسُم الأَماثل بِالهُموم وَطالَما

    عَرفت جِياد الخَيل بِالتَسويم

    Poison circulates amongst the masses; oft

    Have I known steeds by their bridling.

  17. همّ النُفوس المُستَقر بِقَدر ما

    تَأَبى الدنية هِمة المَهموم

    Cares occupy souls to the extent

    That base natures spurn the concerns of the grieved.

  18. لَم يَردَع الأَحزان إِلّا قَلب مَن

    قَد قابل الأَقدار بِالتَسليم

    Only a heart that meets fortunes

    With acceptance restrains anguish.

  19. فَاِقنَع وَلا تَكشف قشناع الصَبر عَن

    ماء الحَياة لِصاحب وَحَميم

    So be content; unveil not the mask of patience

    To your bosom friend while breath remains.

  20. وَأَرح فُؤادَكَ لا تَسَل عَن عِلة ال

    أَقسام إِذ لَيسَت سِوى التَقسيم

    Comfort your heart; ask not about the cause

    Of fates, for they are but allotment.

  21. وَإِذا عرفت مقسم الرزق اِستَوى

    مَع جُرأة الضرغام جبن الريم

    When you know the Dispenser of rizq, the daring

    Of the wolf and the cowardice of the fox are equal.

  22. لَم يَرتَضِ العَرَضَ الكَريمُ كَرامَة

    لِعِبادِهِ إِذ كانَ غَير جَسيم

    The Benevolent did not approve a generous

    Gift for His servants, for He transcends need.

  23. لَو كانَت الدُنيا تَليقُ بِجودِهِ

    أَضحى بِها مُلكاً أَقل عَديم

    Had the world befitted His bounty,

    He'd have made it a trifling dominion.

  24. حسن بِرَب العَرش ظَنك دائِماً

    تَظفر بِخَير لَيسَ بِالمَحسوم

    Think good of the Lord of the Throne, and you

    Will attain the unforeseen best.

  25. كَم مِن غَنيّ حَظُهُ مِن مالِهِ

    تَعب الحَريص وَحَسرة المَحروم

    What wealth some rich possess, yet

    Theirs are but toil and deprived longing!

  26. يَلقى الفَقير مصعراً خَدّاً لَهُ

    وَيَلي المَليّ بِجانب مَهضوم

    The destitute meets sullen-faced ones

    While the affluent are flanked by the meek.

  27. أَمع التَبصبص لِلكِلاب تَكبر

    غَير التَبَختُر مَشية المَهزوم

    You disdain sniffing at dogs, yet haughtiness

    Is no better than the gait of the defeated.

  28. بَرق البَخيل وَإِن تَأَلَّقَ خلَّبٌ

    وَودادهُ وادٍ بِغَير نَسيم

    The flame of the miser may flare, yet it flickers.

    His affection an abyss without breeze.

  29. كُن بِالتَواضع لِلوَرى مُتحبباً

    إِن التَواضع جالب التَفخيم

    Be endearing to all through humility,

    For humility brings exaltation.

  30. كَم خادم في الهَون وَهُوَ أَحَق لَو

    بَرَح الخِفاء بِرُتبة المَخدوم

    What an attendant in disgrace! Had he but left

    Seclusion, he'd gain the station of the served.

  31. لين الخِطاب مَع الفَقير كَأَنَّهُ

    نَفس النَسيم يَمُرُّ بِالمَحموم

    Speaking gently to the needy as though

    A soft breeze passing the burning hot.

  32. مَن يَغرس الإِحسان يَجن مَحبة

    دون المُسيء المُبعَد المَصروم

    He who plants kindness reaps affection,

    Unlike the evildoer, shunned and banned.

  33. أَقلِ العثارَ تُقَل وَلا تَحسد وَلا

    تَحقد فَلَيسَ المَرء بِالمَعصوم

    Overlook the lapses of people and envy none,

    For no man is infallible.

  34. خَفَف عَلى الناس المُؤنة في اللقا

    إِن المُخفف لَيسَ بِالمَسئوم

    Lighten the burden when you meet,

    For the lightener is not to be blamed.

  35. وَإِذا صَنَعت صَنيعة فَاِكتُم وَلا

    تَمنن فَظَلَ المَنّ مَن يَحموم

    When you do a good deed, then conceal it;

    Boast not, for boasting sours the favor.

  36. وَاِحذَر سُموم الإِغتياب فَلَن تَرى

    في الخَلق مُغتاباً صَحيح أَديم

    Beware the venom of backbiting, for never

    Will you find an inveterate backbiter true.

  37. دارِ السَفيهِ وَلا تَمار تكرماً

    يَرجَع بِأَنف راغم مَهشوم

    Avoid the foolish, and do not contend generously

    Against one whose argument is twisted and crushed.

  38. وَكَوامن الحُساد لا تَخفى وَكَم

    زِند يَبوح بِسره المَكتوم

    Speak according to your worth always, and to the worth

    Of whom you address, gently imparting wisdom.

  39. وَالصدق مِن كَرَم الطِباع وَطالَما

    باء الكَذوب بِخجلة وَوجوم

    Aspire, my lad, to truths, drawing

    From the explicit and the implied.

  40. وَاِحذَر نُحوس منجم يَستَقبل الكَف

    الخَضيب بِوَجهِهِ المَلطوم

    Deem not that some knowledge can be attained

    Save by devoting care and commitment.

  41. خاطب بِقَدرك دائِماً وَبِقَدر مَن

    خاطَبتُهُ بِالرفق وَالتَفهيم

    Speak not ignorantly amidst the circle of experts

    In prose or verse, lest you expose your deficiency.

  42. وَإِلى الحَقائق يا فَتى كُن طامِحاً

    أَخذاً مِن المَنطوق وَالمَفهوم

    What a pretentious prattler! Singing

    Does not suit the throat of a donkey.

  43. لا تَحسَبَنَ العلم يُدرك بَعضَهُ

    إِلّا بِصَرف عِناية وَلُزوم

    Be not content save with correctness, and stop

    Short of limits in your persevering efforts.

  44. وَبِغَير فهم في نَدي القَوم لا

    تَنطق بِمَنثور وَلا مَنظوم

    A disputant bested by his betters—a group

    Well-versed, yet he harvested nothing but pith.

  45. كَم مُخطيء متشدق مَتفيقه

    لَيسَ الغِناء يَليق بِالعَلجوم

    Away with you, foal! For you bolted headlong.

    You will be dragged between the stable and enclosure.

  46. لا تَرضَ إِلّا بِالإِصابة أَوفقف

    عِندَ الحُدود بِجَدك المَثلوم

    O soul! Beware, for you are chastised

    Above all people with blame and sin.

  47. وَمُجادل مِن فَوقهُ مِن مَعشر

    حَذقوا وَلَم يَظفر بِغَير رَقوم

    Noble, you left your lofty world

    And befriended all the vile and base.

  48. مه يا فَصيل فَقَد عجلت مُجرجراً

    سَتجرُّ بَينَ قَناعس وَقُروم

    You neglected thanking the Bestower of Reason

    After blessed life, the Ever-Present Sustainer;

  49. يا نَفس فَاِنتَبِهي فَأَنتِ مُرادة

    دون الوَرى بِاللَوم وَالتَأَثيم

    You grew lazy to acquire knowledge which,

    If missed in life, becomes as naught;

  50. فارقتِ عالَمَكِ الشَريف شَريفة

    فَأَلفتِ كُل مُدنس وَذَميم

    You were content to gain each merit

    And truth with fancied gain.

  51. وَغَفِلتِ عَن شُكر المَفيض العَقل مِن

    بَعد الحَياة المُنعم القَيوم

    You were corrupted by passions in a pasture—

    A gloomy, murky resort of vice.

  52. وَكَسلتِ عَن تَحصيلك العلم الَّذي

    إِن فاتَ حَيّاً فَهُوَ كَالمَعدوم

    How pretentiously you act while you are

    In fact abased, degraded! Vainglory is most ugly.

  53. وَرَضيتِ مِن أَحراز كُل فَضيلة

    وَحَقيقة بِمحصل مَوهوم

    If you have no faith or piety,

    A dog is more deserving of honor.

  54. دنَّستِ بِالشَهواتِ أَزدية النُهى

    في مَرتَع وَعر المَقيل وَخيم

    Indeed, you have committed major sins,

    And minor ones, wronging all the innocent.

  55. كَم تبذخين وَأَنتِ أَنتِ دَناءَة

    وَخَساسة وَالفَخر أَقبَح خيم

    If you are rational, you have been addressed

    In rulings with obligation and prohibition.

  56. إِن كانَ لا علم لَدَيك وَلا تُقى

    فَالكَلب أَولى مِنكِ بِالتَكريم

    So derive a lesson, O wise,

    From this momentous affair!

  57. أَما الذُنوب فَقَد جَنيت كِبارَها

    وَصِغارَها وَظلمت كُل غَريم

    God transcends praise; He forgives

    And pardons the ordained duty.

  58. إِن كُنتِ عاقِلة فَقَد خوطِبَت في ال

    أَحكام بِالتَحليل وَالتَحريم

    With what can I escape when my argument

    Is refuted and opponents gain mastery over me?

  59. تَعقيب فَاِعتبروا بِفَحوى يا أُولي ال

    أَلباب مِن شَأن هُناكَ عَظيم

    Alas, unless by the mercy of the love of one

    Whose intercession has been made general.

  60. نعم الإِلَهُ بِفَضلِهِ مُتَجاوِزٌ

    وَمُسامح في الواجب المَحتوم

    His intercession is owed to every monotheist,

    And I am resolved upon Divine Oneness.

  61. فَبِمَ التَخَلُص يَوم تَدحض حِجَتي

    عَدلاً وَتَستَعلي عَلَيَّ خُصومي

    God—exalted is His remembrance—is gracious

    In emphasizing honor and reverence.

  62. هَيهات إِلّا أَن رَحمت بِحب مَن

    تَشفيعهُ قَد خَصَ بِالتَعميم

    I expect, therefore, not to waste

    The gift between an Honorer and the recipient of honor.

  63. وَجَبت شَفاعَتُهُ لِكُلِ مُوَحدٍ

    وَأَنا عَلى التَوحيد بِالتَصميم

    It is but a droplet of His boundless rain of mercy,

    While the sea is contained in the dripping of its clouds.

  64. وَاللَهُ أَعلى ذكرَهُ مُتَفَضِلاً

    بِمُؤكد التَكريم وَالتَعظيم

    Why not a sea of generosity and a droplet

    To quench my thirst one day when I arrive?

  65. فَالظَنُ إِني لا أَكونُ مُضيعاً

    مَع ذاكَ بَينَ مكرم وَكَريم

    Blessings upon him whom God mentioned whenever

    His name is uttered, and upon his family and companions.

  66. هُوَ رَحمَة ما البَحر إِلّا قَطرة

    في جَنب أَيسَر غَيثِها المَسجوم

  67. أَفما نَرى مِن بَحر جود قَطرة

    يُروى بِها عَطَشي غَداة قُدومي

  68. صَلى عَلَيهِ اللَهُ ما ذكر اِسمَهُ

    وَالآل وَالأَصحاب بِالتَسليم
