1. زَجر الرَعد مُثقَلات الغَمامِ

    وَحدتها السمال جَنح الظَلام

    The thunder rebuked the burdened clouds

    And drove them with the darkness of night

  2. وَسَرى البَرق في السَماءِ كَأَن ال

    برق أَمسى يَقودَها بِزِمامِ

    Lightning streaked the sky as though

    It led the clouds, holding their reins

  3. فَاتَت سَفح قاسيون صَباحاً

    وَأِستَهَلت عَلى جِنان الشَئام

    Dawn broke over Mt Qasioun

    And shone upon the gardens of evil

  4. مَنبع العلم مشرع الفَضل مَأوى ال

    أَنبياء الكِرام دار السَلام

    Fountain of knowledge, courtyard of virtue, refuge

    Of the noble prophets, abode of peace

  5. مَعدَن الجود مَجمَع الظَرف وَالآ

    داب وَالأُنس صَيقل الأَفهام

    Mine of generosity, gathering of manners and courtesy

    And companionship, polishing of minds

  6. مَطلع الحُسن بَل مَنازل أَقما

    ر الهَوى بَل مَسارح الآرام

    Rising of beauty, rather dwellings of the beloved

    Rather theaters of tranquility

  7. ثُم حَيت عَني وُجوهاً تَضيءُ الل

    يل مِن مَعشَر عَليَّ كِرام

    Then I was greeted by faces that illuminate the night

    From a group honorable to me

  8. أَوجُهاً تَقطر البَشاشة مِنها

    في خِلال الحَديث وَالإِبتِسام

    Faces dripping cheerfulness from them

    In the course of talk and smiles

  9. لا يَزالُ الحَياء يُلهبها حَتّى

    تَراها لِصَبغِهِ كَالدَوامي

    Modesty keeps inflaming them until

    You see them blushed like pomegranates

  10. أَنا راعٍ لِعَهدِهم أَنا مُشتا

    ق إِلى طيب قُربِهم أَنا ظامي

    I tend their pact, I yearn for the goodness

    Of their nearness, I am a protector

  11. فَلو أَني سُقيت جيحان ما أَطفَأ

    لِوَحي بيرده وَأَوامي

    If I were given a cup of wine, it would not

    Quench my fervor and aspirations

  12. ما بِأَمري فِراقهم بَل بِحُكم الدَهر

    وَالدَهر أَظلَم الحُكام

    It was not my choice to part from them, but the decree

    Of fate, and fate is the most unjust judge

  13. ظَلَمَتني حَوادث الدَهر لَما

    تَخذتني دَرية لِلسِهام

    The vicissitudes of fate wronged me when

    They made me a prey for arrows

  14. وَرَحيل الأَحرار عار عَلى البُلدان

    لا بَل عَيب عَلى الأَيام

    The departure of the noble is disgrace upon countries

    Rather, a blemish upon the days

  15. وَبِنَفسي فيهُم أَخاً قَصرت عَن

    دَرك أَوصاف قَدرِهِ أَوهامي

    And I am, among them, a brother who fell short

    Of grasping the virtues of their worth in my imaginations

  16. غَير أَني أَراهُ أَلطَف عِندي

    مِن مَجال الأَرواح في الأَجسام

    Except I see him as more gentle to me

    Than the spirit's range in bodies

  17. كُلَّما غَنَت الحَمائِم في الفَجر

    سَقَتني ذِكراه كَأس الحَمام

    Whenever the doves cooed at dawn

    Their mention gave me a cup of fervor

  18. يا حَياتي أَراكِ عاراً مَع التَفريق

    وَالبُعد فَاِذهَبي بِسَلام

    Oh my life, I see you disgraced with separation

    And distance, so depart in peace
