1. استغرُ الله العظيمَ العفوِ

    من كلِّ ذنبٍ وهوى ولَهوِ

    God's great mercy and pardon

    Forgives every sin, passion and idle play

  2. ياخالقا لكلِّ شيءٍ حَتما

    وَسِغت كلاً رحمةً وعِلما

    O Creator of all things eternally

    Your mercy and knowledge encompass perfectly

  3. يا سابقَ الرَّحمةِ والعنايَة

    وواهبَ التوفيق والدِّراية

    O First in mercy and care

    Granter of success and wisdom rare

  4. بفضلك اللهمِّ فاستُر الزَّلَل

    فإنَّهُ أرجَى لنا من العمل

    By Your grace protect us from stumbling

    For that is better for us than our deeds numbering

  5. جَلّ الذي قد خلقَ الإنسانا

    أودَع فيه العقلَ والبيَانا

    Exalted is He who created humankind

    Endowing them with reason and eloquence refined

  6. الرازق العبدَ مع المعَاصِي

    ذُو العفوِ عند الأخذِ بالنَّواصي

    Though He sustains His servants despite their disobedience

    The Forgiving One will take them to account nonetheless

  7. يسترُ منا جهلنا وتُعلِنُ

    ولم نزل نسيءُ وهوَ يحسِنُ

    To deny the part of free will, deluded they are

    Yet to man is ascribed choice, in summary

  8. كم شِدَّةٍ آخذةٍ بالنَّفسِ

    فَرَّجهَا عنَّا بغيرِ لُبسِ

    Leave this matter ordained by fate

    Some say "It happened as it was written" my mate

  9. فهذه أرجوزةٌ مُزدَوجَه

    في مُلَحِ الشطرنج جاءَت مُبهِجه

    While other matters by fate are ordained

    Yet of them this is said: "By their effort obtained"

  10. بِكرٌ ولكن الكتاب خِدرُها

    ومن ذوي الفضل القبول مَهرُها

    All is done by one steadfast Doer

    Woe to those who deny and disbelieve in Him, the Fool

  11. خالصةٌ تَمشِي على استِحياءِ

    من خَشية الفقدِ إِلى الأكفاءِ

    The secret remains behind a veil

    Though glimpsed at times when barriers fail

  12. جامعةٌ في كلِّ بيتِ شِعر

    معنىً رقيقا تحتَ لفظِ حُرِّ

    To the bat is the dawn obscured

    Naught but confusion can be inferred

  13. ناظِمُها ولا تسل عبدٌ مُسِي

    إنَّ عَنَّ لم يُذكَر وإن غَاب نُسِي

    From here, let us speak in description

    With gentle expression and apt precision

  14. عارٍ منَ الفضائل الذاتيَّةُ

    وإنما لصورةُ إنسانية

    I've composed some pieces small in form

    Yet to the wise, grave and far from the norm

  15. لكن في أخلاقهِ الفِطريَّه

    معرفةُ المقدور حسن النَّيَه

    Strung like a necklace fresh and new

    Not crude or contrived, the chosen few

  16. قد وضعَ الشطرنجَ أهلُ الهِند

    ونَظرَتهُم فارسٌ بالنَّرَّد

    Concise yet expansive in each verse

    Profound meanings beneath the terse

  17. كأنما الهنديُّ أومى في القدر

    إِلى الذي بطلاتُه قد اشتَهَر

    Its composer remains unnamed

    Though absent, let him not be blamed

  18. وكلُّهم في معزلٍ بعيدِ

    عن عقد أهل السُّنَةِ السَّديد

    No boast of natural virtues made

    But the human condition displayed

  19. واضعُ النَّرد من الجبرية

    ليس يجيزُ الكسبَ بالكلية

    In innate manners and insight wise

    He knew his limits, of humble guise

  20. فإنَّهُ خُلاصةُ التَّوحيد

    الواضحُ البرهانِ بالتأييد

    In India chess was created

    The Persians observed and reiterated

  21. إذكلُّ ممكنٍ على الإطلاقِ

    فعندنا بقدرةِ الخَلاَّق

    As if the Indian hinted furtively

    To those whose leisure had notoriety

  22. وإنما للعبد نوعُ كَسب

    عن حكمة الفرد المريد ينبي

    All were misguided, far from the creed

    Of Sunnis, rightly guided indeed

  23. وذاكن كيلا يَبطل العقابُ

    ولا يضيعُ الوعدُ والثَّواب

    The chess inventor believed in fatalism

    Denying free acts categorically

  24. إنكارنُ جزءِ الاختيارِ ظلُّه

    والكسبُ منسوبٌ له في الجُملَة

    Quintessence of pure monotheism

    Evident, with proofs of the Divine warrant

  25. دَعَنَّ ذا أمرٍ ساقَهُ التَّقديرُ

    يُقالُ فيه جَرَّهُ التَّدبيرُ

    For all contingent depends on the Omnipotent

    Thus different for man is his earned fate

  26. وربَّ أمرٍ ساقَهُ التَّقديرُ

    يقالُ فيه جَرَّهُ التَّدبيرُ

    By wisdom of the One, the Willing and Potent

    Denial of choice shadows this belief

  27. والكلُّ من فِعلِ مُريدٍ واحد

    فالويلُ للجَاحدِ والمُعَاندِ

    Yet to man in general is choice the brief

    Let us leave this matter of predestination

  28. والسرُّ خافٍ دونَه الستائِرُ

    وربّما تلمحُهُ البصَائِرُ

    Some say "It was plotted", a duplication

    While other matters plotted by the divine

  29. والصُّبحُ مستورٌ عن الخُفّاشِ

    فما لَهُ مِنه سِوى الإيحاشِ

    Of them it is said: "By their design"

    All is done by one steadfast Doer

  30. ومن هُنا فخذ بنا بالوصفِ

    بِلُطفِ أُسلوبٍ وحُسنِ رَصف

    Woe to those who reject, the obstinate fool

    The morn's advent veiled from bats in full

  31. ألِفتُ اشياءً ضئيلةَ الصُّور

    وعند من يدري جَليلة الخطر

    May glimpses by insight the veil annul

    From here gently by description proceed

  32. ناضرة بعقدٍ من عَسجَد

    ما انطبقت ولا زنَت بمردد

    With refined expression your wisdom stampede

    I've joined small pieces of imagery

  33. لا تَشتكي من عَبرةٍ ولا رَمَد

    وكحلهَا السهر عسى طُول الأمد

    Grave to the wise though of blended tracery

    Beads on a string, fresh and bright

  34. نهارُها حربٌ بلا وِفاق

    وليلُها ينضَّمَّ والعِناقِ

    Not crude or contrived, though novice in sight

    Concise yet broad in meaning for each verse

  35. تَقتُلُ ثمَّ بالاكفِّ تُقبَرُ

    على مدى السَّاعات ثم تُنَشَرُ

    Profound beneath, the expression terse

    Neither titled nor named its fashioner

  36. لها اجتماعُ كلُّه عراكً

    وسكناتٌ كلُّها حِرَاكُ

    Though unnamed, let him not dishonored be

    No boast of talents he made

  37. تُومِي إليه الحالُ والألفاظُ

    وربَّ صَمتٍ كنَه إيقَاظُ

    But the human condition displayed

    In manners innate and insight sage

  38. لله درُّ واضعِ الشطرنجِ

    فالظَّرفُ أحيانا إليه يُلجِي

    He knew his limits of humble stage

    In chess the Hindus their minds applied

  39. وأنَّهُ من جُملَةِ الآدابِ

    عند ذوي الأخطارِ والألبابِ

    The Persians observed, they reiterated

    As if the Hindu hinted furtively

  40. والحقَّ أنَّ الشرعَ عنه نَاهى

    لكونِه من جُملةِ الملاهِي

    To those whose leisure gained notoriety

    All were misguided from the Creed

  41. لكنَّ فيه فسحةً قد تُقبَل

    عن الإمامِ الشافعي تُنقَل

    Of Sunnis, guided aright indeed

    Fatalists invented this chess feign

  42. من غير إخلالٍ بحفظ الواجبِ

    ولا قمار وهو سمُّ الكَاسبِ

    Acts they deem fixed, an idolatrous claim

    For us all is by the Mighty Maker done

  43. وكونُهُ رياضةٌ للفِكرِ

    يَقبَلُهُ العقلُ بِغَير نُكرِ

    Contingent on His will, the matchless One

    To man is a type of choice allowed

  44. قد يحسنُ اللعبُ به أحيانا

    بقدر ما يروَّحُ الأذهانا

    By wisdom of the One, the Willing, no doubt

    Lest invalidated be recompense

  45. إذ قد يكلّ السمعُ من إصغائِه

    إذا جليسُ لجَّ في إهذائِهِ

    Lost reward and retribution against offense

    Denial of choice shadows this belief

  46. وقد غدت في عصرنا المُعاشره

    محاوراتٍ كلّها مهاتره

    Yet to man in general is choice the brief

    Let us leave the matter of fate

  47. أو ترهاتٍ في الفخَار زاهقة

    والحال على خلاف ذاكَ ناطقه

    Some say "It happened" though frustrate

    While matters of fate some obtain

  48. وأصبحت شمسُ الصَّفاء كاسفه

    وسيرةُ الإمامِ فينا عاسفة

    By effort's design and wise aim

    May both join and cease contention

  49. وأنَّهُ عُلالةُ المحزونِ

    عند تلؤُنِ الزَّمانِ الدُّون

    Fate and free acts find dimension

    Much like the matter of chess engaged

  50. يكفيك هَمُّ الوحشةِ المشتَدَّة

    في الليلةِ الشاتيةِ الممتَدّة

    Conflicting views may find assuage

    So the rational conclude and aver

  51. فاغتنمِ الأوقات فهي قانِية

    وتَشهدُ للمرءِ حياة ثَانِيَة

    It is a sea with no coast or shore

    Two armies led by guiding stars

  52. ومِن مزاياهُ التي لا تُجحَدُ

    وكلُّ قَرَّبهُ من المَلِك

    Each has its protectors and ministers

    Trusting the conduct to two bound

  53. تعطيفه المولى لِعَبدِ المحط

    وربَّما قَرَّبهُ من المَلِك

    Leaders, amongst the greatest found

    No king dares near an opposing crown

  54. وربما أكسبَ من يُزاوِلُه

    نباهةً إن فاقَ لا تُزَايِلُه

    Nor views truce, their stations known

    Embroiled forever in enduring strife

  55. وتَركُ من يلهو به للغيبةِ

    في وقتنا هذا بغير رَيبَةِ

    Till one meets his death, ends his life

    The king's aide and wise vizier

  56. وأنَّه لعبرةٌ لمن نظَر

    فقاسَ دُنياء به ثمَّ اعتَبَر

    Guarding the central squares with might

    Above all pieces his power and sight

  57. حوادثٌ يَبقَى الذي فيها حَكَم

    ومُنتَهى كلَّ الحوادثِ العَدَم

    Surrounded by twenty seven abodes

    Counting his zones the eight roads

  58. مائدةٌ تُغذِّي القلوبَ بالحِكَم

    تَجِلُّ عن وخَامةٍ وعن تُخَم

    None who challenged him here did endure

    All but two met their end, dark and dire

  59. تَلِذُّ لِلمُملِقِ والغَنيِّ

    والحاذِق المُتقِنِ والغَبي

    How many formations he did invert

    Troops' arrays shredded and subvert

  60. مبذولةُ على الرَّخاء والمَحلَّ

    فيقتدي كلُّ يقدر العَقل

    Any he catches certainly dies

    For prey's destiny is the falcon's prize

  61. ميدانُ فكر ضَيِّقِ الأرجَاءِ

    متَّسعٍ بِقَدَّر الآراء

    Mark the rook's resilient campaign

    With endless stamina despite pain

  62. إذا لم يرَ الراؤون بالموافقة

    دستا كدست جَاء بالمطابقة

    Often sweeping with might intrinsic

    Snatching queens, then swift and mystic

  63. ومن هنا يصحُّ حُكمُ العاقِل

    بأنَّه بحرٌ بغيرِ ساحلِ

    Foray and withdraw, beware his assault

    Joined with the knight, even stronger vault

  64. جيشانِ من حامٍ به وسامِ

    من كل حامي حوزة وِسَام

    The prancing knight, intrepid and daring

    Headlong in battle, all perils sharing

  65. مُفَوّض التدبير بالتزامِ

    إِلى رئيسينش من العِظامِ

    His independent skills merit attention

    His moves match no others' invention

  66. وليس يَدنُو ملكٌ من صاحبه

    وَلاَ يَرَى الهُدنةَ من مَذاهبه

    No same squares nor pattern perceived

    None can predict how he may weave

  67. يجتمعان الدَّهرَ في ذراعِ

    في مثلهِ لكن مع القِرَاعِ

    Bay or gray, purebred and tall

    Black or brown, piece shaped night's pall

  68. وكم به منتهزٌ للقُرصَةِ

    وراجعٍ عن قِرنه بِغُصَّةِ

    If provoked, your will he may refuse

    Beware if you force him against his use

  69. ينجمُ فيه بطلٌ بعد بَطَل

    ويستوي شانٌ إذا شانٌ بَطَل

    Gently stroke his eyes, reward and befriend

    Though served by many, peerless he'll contend

  70. كلُّ يرى مصرعَهُ ويُقدِمُ

    كأنَّهُ يقتلُ حين يَحجُمُ

    Elsewhere, like an ass with noble line

    His nature is betrayed, no longer fine

  71. له فؤادٌ لم يحل فيه وَجَل

    والجبنُ لا يُغني إشذا حلَّ الأجَل

    So respect him, let his virtues blossom

    His glory apparent, princely awesome

  72. كأنَّه يعلّم أن الحذَرا

    ليس يُنجِي المرءَ ممّا قَدرا

    The bishop's powers merit caution

    Guide his steps, avoid his predation

  73. وهكذا الحرُّ يرى المنية

    أولى به من خطةٍ دَنيَّه

    The rook like elephant with probing snout

    Can sweep the board if you don't route

  74. صمتٌ وصبرٌ وكفاحٌ لم يزل

    وخدعٌ من دونها وقعُ الأسَل

    Attack or divert, confuse his advance

    Lest he o'erwhelm with his countenance

  75. وربّما عَنَّت قضَايا منتجه

    لحادثاتٍ وخُطوبٍ مزعِجَة

    Call him pawns, the hardy shield

    Who never retreat but sacrifice when felled

  76. ومشكل ما جالَ في وهم البشَر

    ولا رآه قبله من ذي نظر

    Set firm, they allow no passage home

    What the first misses, the next will hound

  77. فأعجزَ الوزيرَ عن تَدبيرهِ

    وازعجَ السّلطان عن سَريرهِ

    Scorpions, when ably maneuvered

    Are lethal when cleverly delivered

  78. وهكذا حوادثُ الأيَّامش

    تلعبُ بالحُرِّ بلا احتشامِ

    Now hear what I say regarding its ways

    Wise counsel for those who spend time and days

  79. حتى إذا ما بَيدَقٌ تَفرزَت

    واحتقرَ الأقران فاشتدَّ العَنَا

    Beneath prudent maxims' inclusion

    And subtle wisdoms' infusion

  80. لم يلبثِ الدستُ به أن يَبطُلا

    ويهدم المجدَ وتَسمَح العلا

    Insights from humor the keen may reap

    Beyond cups and wine, though side feats

  81. أفٍ لأيام بها يعلو التقّدّ

    يجترى سفاهةً على الأسّد

    Jests at times can salutary be

    As wit in all matters gains currency

  82. ولا يعمُّ الدولَة الفسادُ

    إِلا إذا اللئامُ فيها سادوا

    Silence, reflection, patience and calm

    Stillness, composure, delay of harm

  83. واستمع التَّعريفَ فيها بالعَرض

    وتارةً بالذاتِ والوصفِ الغرض

    Thoughtful planning secrets will extract

    Success with care and tact

  84. فالشاه فهي القطعة المقصودة

    بالذات والحرب بها مَعقُودة

    No triumph without considered pace

    Far from recklessness, or coward's place

  85. فلا تكن ذا خفةٍ وطَيشٍ

    لأنه سلطانُ ذاك الجيشِ

    When speech and clamor judgment prevent

    The truth appears not, only dissent

  86. مادامَ في جنُوده فلا رَهَق

    إلا إذا لم يبق فيهم ذو رَمَق

    No gain for impetuous, hasty ones

    Nor irascible, stubborn sons

  87. ولا يلي بنفسهِ الحُروبا

    ولا يُعاني جمرهَا المشبوبا

    Between recklessness and truth a divide

    No counsel the foolish can provide

  88. وربَّما باشرهَا وجَدَا

    من لم يَجِد من القِتال بُدّا

    Regret awaits the reckless, imprudent guide

    And blame for those who cautions deride

  89. ومن يَحِز مُلكاً بلا شجاعَه

    وحسنِ تدبيرٍ له أضاعَه

    Scorn not one thought puny in your eyes

    If aiming to grow he strives and tries

  90. واختار ناسٌ نقلةً للميمنَة

    عند الوغَى لأن ذاك ميمنة

    A spark once kindled flares into fire

    Many small things gain might and ire

  91. في موكبٍ حماته حذر الحدَق

    يقضي الحمام خيفةً من الغَرَق

    In battle, some risks may profit

    With care and seeking each bit

  92. وقد يليق مُكثُه في القلبِ

    لأنه قُطبُ الرَّحا في الحَرب

    Withhold no feeble piece from the attack

    If dealing a major blow is no lack

  93. وفي الجناحين حماةٌ دونه

    والنفسُ تَردى إن غدت مسجونَة

    But mind consequences in each selection

    And think through motives and plan of action

  94. والبأسُ كلّ البأس في الفرزانِ

    وزيرُ ذاك الملكِ المِعوان

    The correct goals will imagination evince

    Not rashness, but nor cowardice wins

  95. يحمي ماكان وسط الرُّقعة

    ببأسِه من دون كلّ قطعة

    When options seem equal, the mind confused

    Letters patent, and caution the muse

  96. سبعٌ وعشرون بيوتا خاليةُ

    تُعَدَّ من جِهاتها الثمانية

    Scorn not one overwhelmed with panic dread

    Nor with bait of ambition misled

  97. وكلّ من قاومه فيها افترس

    وما يفوته سوى مَشيُ الفَرَس

    When the king is threatened, plan for safety

    His loss greater than all else calamity

  98. كم نسف الكماة فيها نسقا

    وزعزع الحُمَاةَ صفاً صفا

    Expose not your king in isolation

    Such desperate acts invite expiration

  99. من صادهُ تاه به واستَبثرا

    لأنَّ كلّ الصَّيد في جَوف الفرا

    God bless the adept concealing his aim

    Striking unseen, his strategy and game

  100. هذا ولا تنس قتال الرّخ

    وصبره في الحرب بخِّ بخ

    Subtle threats from light square finesse

    Can morph to grave and dire duress

  101. كم حام في أوج الوغا ودارا

    واختطفَ الكماةَ ثم طارا

    The more cryptic to minds and wise

    The more portent and peril in guise

  102. لهُ بهام الأدوا صَخُّ

    وهو مع القدم الغبي فَرخُ

    The opponent is lured to danger unguessed

    Till the ruse and spell manifest

  103. والفرسُ الكرَّارُ وهو المقتَحِم

    عند الوغى كلَّ مخوفٍ مُزدَحِم

    Magic undetected spreads charm

    Compelling folly to suffer harm

  104. له انفرادٌ بخصالٍ تُذكَر

    بأن شاه ستره ليس يُستَر

    Few players refrain from undue interference

    However unwitting, impeding competence

  105. ولم يشاركه السّوى في مشيته

    ولا ترى من حاجزٍ لوثبته

    With gestures, signs, or just a frown

    Silence useless chatterers, don't back down

  106. من أشهبٍ صافي الأديم كالشَّفَق

    وادهمٍ كقطعِةٍ من الغَسَق

    Curb exceeding claims of pure authority

    Discretion gains more credibility

  107. والطرف يكبُو فاحفظ العِنانا

    واحذر إذا أكرهتَهُ الحِرَانَا

    Reprove the fool nor his antics suffer

    Kindly teach, don't blame or anger

  108. يمسح عينيهِ الكريم يكرمه

    ولو غدا ملأ الفضا من يخدمهُ

    Suggest, don't demand, avoid friction

    Seeking assent maintains jurisdiction

  109. وقد يكون عند غير أهلهِ

    مثلَ الحمارِ مع طِيبِ أصلهِ

    Win or lose, a smile may mend

    Praise as warranted or a poem send

  110. فلا تهن بالله بعد تلك الجبهة

    فإنّها لا تستحق الجبهة

    Mildly wounding as claws that scrape

    Not to cause anger beyond escape

  111. العزُّ في غُرَّتهِ علانية

    والخيرُ معقودٌ بتلك النَّاصية

    Patience and composure when fate is unfair

    Are virtues beyond all else and rare

  112. والفيل وهوَ شاربٌ الخرطومِ

    يلتهم الأفرانَ بالخرطوم

    Anger enlarges sorrow and loss

    Scatter wits, judgment at cost

  113. له هجومٌ فاسدُدَن ممرَّهُ

    ببيدقٍ عسى تصدّ شره

    The defeated excuses will propose

    Complex, cool, and morose

  114. فربما أطاع من يَرُوض

    وربما أضجرَهُ البعوض

    As lovers denied, dismayed and forlorn

    When meeting guardian or watcher's scorn

  115. وقل إذا ما شئت بالبيادق

    دوانق الثّغور والفواتق

    Threats and hints of vengeance may be cast

    As the defeated takes the conflict past

  116. فهي إذا ما زحفت لا ترجع

    إن فاتها الصّدرُ التقاه المصرح

    Murmurings, unintelligible dissent

    Like scorpion tails when mischief is meant

  117. عقاربٌ من شأنها الدبيبُ

    إذا أجاد سَوقَها الأريبُ

    When the leopard unleashes mayhem in anger

    Pause before reacting, not rash or bitter

  118. ثم استمع ما قلتُ من آدابه

    فهي وصايا عند من يُعنى بِه

    Observe all with eyes askance

    Venting frustration with sigh or glance

  119. في ضمن حكمةٍ مقبولة

    ومُلحَةٍ بحكمة معسولة

    As a timid thief filled with alarm

    When constables approach to disarm

  120. قد يأخذ اللبيب من بعض المُلَح

    ما لا يكون في المُدام والقَدَح

    Addled as birds when talons draw near

    Targeting fledglings for their cheer

  121. والهزلُ أحياناً اليه يجنحُ

    والحذق في كلِّ الأمور يمدَحُ

    Feign sympathy, conceal any delight

    Lest honesty breed future spite

  122. من الشروطِ الصمتُ والتأمُّلُ

    والصبرُ والسكونُ والتمهُّلُ

    Express consolation for their wracked nerves

    Or help, though contrived and undeserved

  123. يستخرجُ الخبيء بالتَّظني

    والنجح مقرونٌ مع التَّأنَّي

    Hint obliquely, more than speak outright

    Signals better than waving incite

  124. لا بدّ فيهِ من فراغِ البالِ

    بعد مكانٍ من ثقيل خال

    Especially when whispering aside

    Then winking, may turn the tide

  125. وحيثُ يكثر الكلامُ واللغَط

    لا يظهر الصوابُ بل يبدو الغَلَظ

    With exclamations like "He never quit!

    Kept me up all night, not a bit

  126. لا يحسن اللعب به العجولُ

    ولا غضوبٌ لا ولا ملولُ

    His daze explains his current fix

    But soon his skill will re-emerge and flex"

  127. بين العجولِ والصوابِ حاجزُ

    ولا يصيب الرأيَ الأعاجزُ

    And "Don't laugh friends, no mirth in his fall

    Laughing without cause may on you recall"

  128. لا بدّ لا بد من الندامة

    للاخرق العجول والملامَة

    Some laugh until coughing fits start

    Or coughing persists til they depart

  129. لا تحتقر مستصغراً في العَادة

    إن كان مما يطلبُ الزِّيادة

    Most tend to victor's camp incline

    According to varying past combine

  130. أوائل الثرِّتُرى محتقرة

    كم نار كي أوقدت من شرره

    Fun or serious, all contingent

    On ties formed by time and temperament

  131. لا بدّ في الحرب من التَّجرِّي

    لكن مع التدبير والتّحرِّي

    Those whose supporters began to slip

    No excuses can his errors eclipse

  132. لا تبخلن بقطعة ذميمة

    إن أُوقعت مكيدةٌ عظيمة

    Don't play one exceeded in skill

    Who makes reason and action his will

  133. لكن بشرطِ الفكرِ في العواقبِ

    والنظرِ المنتجِ للمطالبِ

    Nor a lost soul, confused and dazed

    For habits become heartily praised

  134. لا يخطىء المقاصدَ التصورُ

    لا الجبن محمودٌ ولا التهوّرُ

    Don't engage one prone to speak or act wild

    For nature loves its routine style

  135. وقد يحار العقلُ وهو واسعُ

    إِذا تساوى المقتضى والمانعُ

    Nor a dolt, unless you condescend

    Keeping him dependent until the end

  136. لا تك ممن يستفزه والهلع

    أو يزدهيه بيدقٌ من الطمع

    The feeble you'll unlikely defeat

    If you scorn his weakness and indiscreet

  137. وشاهه بها المنونُ أحدقَت

    إن لم تكن ماتَت فقد نَشَجضت

    No gain bandying words with a fool

    The foolish in insults only school

  138. لا تدع شاهك تحت الكشفِ

    في النزع فالنزع رسولُ الحَتفِ

    Beware one who curses and accuses foul

    Can you avoid his slandering howl?

  139. لله درّ ندب كلّ ماهرِ

    يُخفي دبيبَ كيدهِ كسحرِ

    Some swear oaths or force the same

    Admitting the wrong, but not taking blame

  140. تعجبتي المنصوية الخفيفة

    منها تكون الفتكة الحرِّيفة

    Some laugh until they loudly hack

    Then hacking persists til they pack back

  141. وكلما دقَّت على الأنظارِ

    زادت بها جلالةُ الأخطارِ

    In speech avoid faults, guard your tongue

    For that is the wise, old and young

  142. يُستَدرَجُ الخصمُ بها وما درى

    والسحرُ لا يُعلَمُ حتى يظهرا

    Don't mock poverty, the poor man sustains

    No honor in wealth one lightly obtains

  143. وليس يخلو لاعبٌ من مضجرِ

    يأمرُ أو ينهى وإن لم يشعرِ

    Spurn arrogance or claims to excel

    Humility with brothers is wise and well

  144. لا يسلمُ اللاعبُ من فُضولِ

    يذهِلهُ ولو غدا كالصُّولي

    Boasting of status is proof of Vice

    That is the loudmouth's device

  145. لا بد من تعليمهِ بالرمزِ

    إن ترك التصريحَ أو بالغمزِ

    Slander and gossip lead to rejection

    Heeding them reaps only dejection

  146. لا بد من تعليمهِ لا تسأل

    إن قبلتَ منهُ وإن لم تَقبل

    Lies and tall tales breed animosity from the vile and rascal with enmity

    Liars have fallen from virtue's crest

  147. هذا وكم ذو لحيةٍ كُمَيت

    يأخذ بالغمز بحسِّ مَيت

    Sinking to moral depravity's depth

    Likewise curses make outcasts pariah

  148. بطليانٍ كاللحافِ المبَهَجِ

    أضحى من الأدهان كالمدبجِ

    Scripture prohibits such slippery via

    Nothing but aloofness merits the fool

  149. فلا تلاح مثله وخلَّه

    ولا تحاكِ جافياً في فِعله

    I see conflict spreads much like a ghoul

    By tongue and heart man's known

  150. لا بدّ للسها من الأُفول

    واخضابِ الزُّور من نُضُول

    Beyond garb's veil truth is shown

  151. إن كان لا بدّ من التعليم

    بعد خلوص الرأيِ والتصميمِ

  152. فلا تكن بالعنفِ والتهجُّم

    ولا مع الإلزام والتحكمِ

  153. وليَكُ بالمقال لا اليدَينِ

    يحسب الرِّضا من الخصمينِ

  154. ومن عيوبِ اللاّعب الإملالُ

    بالخَطِّ الرُّقعَةِ والإعجالُ

  155. والبطرُ في تفكّرٍ لا يُنتِجُ

    والحركاتُ والصيحُ المزعجُ

  156. وبعضُهم يُمعِنُ في الإطراقِ

    كأنَّه ينظرُ في الأَوفاقِ

  157. وبعضهُم يَرمُقُ عند الملحمَة

    بمقلةٍ حمراء مثل المحجمة

  158. ومنهم من بالسكوت يأمُرُ

    فيسكت الجلأس وهو يَهذُر

  159. وبعضهُم يَشتِمُ حين يُغلَبُ

    ومثل هذا ساقطٌ لا يُصحَبُ

  160. عجبتُ من ذي الشَّتم والسِّبابِ

    وكيف لا يخشى من الجَوابِ

  161. وبعضهُم يحلفُ أو يحلِّفُ

    ويعرفُ الذَّنب ولا يَعتَرِفُ

  162. لكن من أدَّبَهُالكرامُ

    لم يأت يوماً ما به يُلامُ

  163. لا بدَّ للغالبِ من تَبَسُّمِ

    بحسب الأعجاب أو ترنّم

  164. أو مُلَحٍ تأتيك من أشعار

    مؤلمةٍ كالقَرص بالأظفَارِ

  165. فلا يضق منك هناك الصَّدرُ

    وليَجمُل الصبرُ وأين الصبرُ

  166. فإن غَضِبتَ عُظِّم المصابُ

    وضَلَّ بالكُلِّية الصوابُ

  167. لا بدَّ للمغلوب من تعلّل

    بغير مجدٍ عنه أو تَمَلمُل

  168. لكنّه في حجَّةٍ معقَّدة

    باردة مَردودةٍ مردّدة

  169. في ضيقِ صدرِ العاشِق الكئيبِ

    كطلعةِ العاذلِ والرّقيبِ

  170. وربما أوعد بالزَّفيرِ

    وهُدّد الضغيمُ بالصغيرِ

  171. لا بدّ من همهمةٍ تُجَمجمُ

    كَرَّقيَةِ العقربِ ليس تُفهَمُ

  172. في غَضَبِ الفهدِ الوثوب يقتدى

    بعد ثلاثٍ طاوياً لم يَصطَدِ

  173. ينظر بين القوم من طَرفٍ خَفي

    ويتبعُ الأهة بالتأفف

  174. في حيرةِ اللصِ الجبان المفلسِ

    عند لقاءِ العسِ المُغلس

  175. مضطرباً في دَهشةِ العصفور

    إِذا رأى أجنحةَ الصّقور

  176. لا سيما إن أظهر الرّفاقُ

    توجّعاتٍ كلها نِفاقُ

  177. كأنَّها تعزيةً بعد سنة

    بجارة كانت عجوزاً زَمِنة

  178. تَشفينا في صورة التَّوجع

    ونصرة تشف عن تصنع

  179. كناية انكى من تصريح

    لوّاحةٌ تقدح من تلويح

  180. لا سيّما إذا أسرّوا النَّجوى

    ثم تعّامزوا وتلك بلوى

  181. كم قائلٍ واللاّذعات واضِحة

    أظنَّه ما نامَ قطّ البارحة

  182. لأنّني أرى به فُتورا

    لولاه ما كان يُرى مقهُورا

  183. وقبائلٍ خلّو الكلامَ المشتَبِه

    لا تيأسوا منه فسوف يَنتَبِه

  184. وقائلٍ لا تضحكوا ولا عَجَب

    ليس يليق الضّحك إلا عن سَبَب

  185. وبعضهم يضحكُ حتى يسعلا

    ويكثر السُّعال حتّى يثقلا

  186. والناسُ في الإغلَبِ حزبُ الغالبِ

    جَدّا وهَزلاً حسب التّجارب

  187. يا ويح من تخاذلت أنصارُه

    ولم تُقِل عثراتِه أعذاره

  188. فلا تلاعب غيرَ من قدراتهُ

    عقلٌ غدا في فعِله ميزانَهُ

  189. ولا تلاعب تائهاً عربيدا

    إن الطباع تَعشِقُ التّقليدا

  190. ولا بَذيا سِفلةً مُمَاريا

    تحتاجُ أن تَبقَى له مُدَارِيا

  191. لن يغلبَ اللئيم من يشاتمُ

    إن اللئيم بالسِّباب عالمُ

  192. ولا تسوِّف بادي المحَاضرة

    لوقتها واحذر من المُخَاطرة

  193. واستغفر الله عُقَيب اللّعبِ

    واحذر من الحلف به والكَذِب

  194. وجانب الأفراطَ في المِزاح

    فانه ضربٌ من الكفاح

  195. لا تتعرض للعُيوب فيهِ

    فان ذاكَ سمة السَّفيه

  196. ولا تعيِّر أحداً بالفَقرِ

    فانّه بالحُرِّ غَيرُ مُزري

  197. كذاك فاحذر طلبَ التَّفَوقِ

    وعاشر الإخوانَ بالتَّدفقِ

  198. ولا تقل إنّي إلى العلياءِ

    أهلٌ فذاك ديدن الغوغاءِ

  199. والاغتيابُ وكذا النّميمة

    كما لهما عاقبة ذميمة

  200. والكذبُ المُزري بكل شهم

    لا ينبغي إحضارُه في الوهم

  201. صاحِبُهُ من سَقَطِ المَتَاعِ

    لأنَّه من أرذل الطّباع

  202. كذا السبابُ والنبذُ بالألقابِ

    حَرَّمَهُ الدِّيَّان في الكتابِ

  203. وما لذي المُرَاءِ غير الهِجر

    إنِّي أرىَ المُرَاءَ داءً يَسري

  204. وهكذا الشأنُ وما الإنسان

    بالذَّات إِلا القلبُ واللَّسان
