They left me to my insomnia,
My illness and my solitude.
My patience never diminishes,
While my longing ever increases.
Do you think, in remembering me,
Those I described with affection,
Whose heart now prays
The embers of longing and distance,
Like a sick person who turns
Beneath his white cover,
Like a fire that has appeared
To the eye from beneath ashes,
The fire ignited my desires
Without flint.
I remember a heart from times
Past, sweet are the memories.
In Damascus, its generosity overflowed,
My tears and devotion.
It is between yearning,
Fluttering, and burning.
How many nights we spent
In intimacy and unity,
Between vines, pomegranates, lentisks,
`Idan and Shadi.
And wine like the coolness of the sky
In the bosom of the barrren valley,
Above a carpet of flowers
Among the cushions.
In it, the rivers clap
Like the clapping of hands,
And in it, the birds trill
Like a familiar voice.
Beautiful, not blemished
By monastic ritual.
His eyes stole from me
The robe of my devotion and calm.
Magic and melody stole
My sleep and my heart.
After him, my patience betrayed me
As my sleep betrayed me.
Everyone who knows me eulogized me,
Even my enemies.
And everyone who sees me wept for me,
Even those who hate me.
