I am one of the fair from the greatly unjust
So I will never meet him except undeviating
He bars his paradise from me without sin
And the more he bars me, the more my passion grows
And love, though its springs are sweet
Is naught but sickness, sorrow and gloom
I say to my heart and the passions burning it
Of what use has it been, O my heart, save wasting away
I sacrificed my soul to one who gladdens you, my home
And this is no prodigality or excess
I clarified my love for you, apart from mankind and from
Whoever clarifies his love but the impassioned one
Sincere love and its essence are not confused
By one of sense, for pearls are unlike shells
O you who tortures me with rejection, striving
Gently, for my soul is close to extinction
O perfect full moon, may God preserve its image
From eclipse, from loss, from blemish
The moon's light cannot be barred from sight
While you are veiled from me by aloofness
Make your arrows true, O you who lacerated my liver
With glances—for this is the final target
