Breathe, O breeze of Najd, upon a heart brimming with passion,

Perhaps you can soothe the moaning of the afflicted,

From a liver that prays for the scorching of separation.

My overflowing tears almost drown me,

Yet my heart feels no chill.

The sea with its torrents cannot quench

The latent fire that burns within.

If the embers of anguish were to approach my ribs,

My liver would have set them ablaze.

Illness has wasted my body away,

Yet I remain cloaked by apathy.

    Nothing remains but copious tears

    And an outpouring soul.

I sacrifice myself for you, O he who spurned me

    Without cause, breaking our vow.

I have found in loving you the fires of torment,

To me, fire is like the gardens of eternity.

By the rights of Him who decreed all this upon me,

What do you seek to gain from one so loyal?

If you wish to turn me away with rejection,

Who wrongs you, O unjust one?

Or have I given all of my beauty,

When all of my love lies with you?

I have naught but my soul, if you accept it,

You do me a great favor, that is the extent of my pursuit.

You take joy in tormenting me,

You will gain nothing from it, not ever.

What joy can you find, when you kill me,

While my body lies cold after I am gone?

I have reached a state where neither can cure me,

Neither union nor separation I see will avail.

    Insanity without you seizes me,

Yet with you lies the essence of sanity.

I exhausted my wits and life upon you,

And for you went beyond all bounds.

Just because the rose described your cheek,

The scent of roses makes me change.

By God, O morning breeze, are you

The tender branch, the bending bough?

O cheek downy as petals, above the blush

Of cheeks rosy like the red anemone.

    O beads of perfume, coolness

From the intermingling of breeze and nectar.

I yearn for you, but between us

Lies the sword of glance sheathed in its scabbard.

And you, O sorcerer of my eyes, your slaying

    And captivating need no weapons.

O my companions who have settled in desolate places,

Have you forgotten me or our covenant?

I do not forget them when they depart

And the guide travels the hills of Najd.

I say, O guide of the steed, let her rest

A little from the haste and exhaustion.

Do you not see her broken like a water skin

Torn by traveling the roads and tiredness?

Nothing remains but her slender bones

Or delicate hide on the corpse of the mare.

Call to the riders, stop for one weakened!

Over the mare's carcass, nothing but hide.

If you do not wish to be near him

And see his affectionate dark-eyed gaze,

Then let his burning passion give you guidance,

If you are lost in its darkness to find the way.

If the watering places are scarce in the desert,

His tears for the mare will be the sweetest nectar.

    A fault-finder blames me now,

Not shy to criticize and rebut me.

I know not what embitters the critic -

Is it loss or a statue of stone?

A word of advice, don't approach me, fault-finder!

For love after me leads only to ruin.

Take care, O youth, you deceive me!

I see you rave, but I see you not guide.

How many nights I spent sleepless,

Facing alone the army of passion.

The Pleiades gained radiance when they rose

On the dark cheek of night like a necklace.

And night is like my father and confusion,

When its full moon hid from me, lost.

I placate my heart with a false promise,

Can such hopes cure one weakened?

I concealed my love for a time, unaware

Of the injustice that was done to me intentionally.

But when my patience was exhausted,

The tongue of my tears revealed what I did not.
