The pearl of dawn hid in the horizon's shell,

And morning's brow emerged from the east's parting.

The garden's breeze dragged its train of fragrance,

Rousing the leaves to chirp with joy.

Give me a draft of wisdom from your eyes,

That alters reason in the perceptive heart.

No good in drunkenness when waking follows,

No difference between some wakefulness and death.

Can the healthy nature be safe from love,

Or a vacant heart excel in passion?

O you who shed my tears and shed my blood,

Who rob my heart and own my slavery,

You, who gave me tears to drink, a mingled draft,

And I strained it pure affection without taste.

By the one who lifted night's veil from the dawn,

Remove the clouds of frowning from your serene face.

The night of my despair grew dark, so dispel it with a smile,

As lightning dispels the darkest gloom.

Let my tears fill you with my plaint,

For the tear of the sad is worthier of speech.

And though you be harsh, listen to the complaint -

For listening to the tale is a kind of kindness.
