For the distance, the years, that came between us.

My heart was attacked by its swords,

As my tears flowed over Najd's sands.

If only I had watered Damascus’ gardens,

When its edges turned to wilderness!

Now it weeps, robbed of vitality.

    When its nights glowed white.

Were refined, as were their fringes.

Meanwhile my body wastes from yearning,

And my spirit is drained by aloofness.

How often he visited me at night, as we hid

From the watcher, concealing our secrets.

    No watcher but God-consciousness.

From the smile of dawn's cloudless serenity.

    Pure and fragrant like musk.

Though its breeze carried the garden's scent.

Reopens it, rubbing in camphor's sting?

If in people were hearts of compassion.

Nor the first mourned by elegists.

I am not the first freeman to die of grief,

In a stranger's grave, far from lamenters.
