A woman said, “ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz has performed the Hajj.”
I answered her, “The rain-bringer of humankind has performed the Hajj.”
Indeed, the camel, a bearer equal to its burden, carried
in ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz the raincloud’s brimming bucketfuls.
One circled by others circles the Sacred House,
and a pillar embraced its Corner with the ritual touch.
He went forth consecrated, with his wealth lawfully won,
and thereby pleased the Lord of the Sacred House.
He stayed long in the abode of sojourn,
and the length of his stay made us heartsick for him.
Then he set homeward, stripped bare of evil—
—deeds, striding splendidly amid mighty good works.
His rites there were accepted,
and his pilgrimage was righteous and wholly complete.
He left behind praiseworthy noble deeds,
to endure as long as Shamām’s twin peaks.
So take this noble congratulation:
the well-strung verse of a man skilled in stringing verse.
