O ʿAbdallāh, go on—stand or sit—shunning me;
for I have cast you out of my mind and thoughts.
I have emptied my ribs of your love,
though it once lay like a sash across my heart and breast.
The elders among the secretaries die wasted thin,
while your livelihood still flows at sixty.
Your hypocrisy in harshness gives you away:
you take liberties because of my gracious patience.
You have surpassed all who employed me in Baghdad,
and thus attained the pinnacle of every glory.
Those men hired me one day at a time;
whereas you, my employer, do so month by month.
