شَدَّ ما اِستَنزَلَتكَ عَن رَبعِكَ الأَظ

عانُ حَتّى اِستَهَلَّ دَمعُ الغَزالِ

How intensely the places you frequented called you back

from your campsite as the antelope wept!

أَيُّ حُسنٍ في الذاهِبينَ تَوَلّى

وَجَمالٍ عَلى ظُهورِ الجِمالِ

What beauty turned its back on the departing ones?

What gorgeous one retreated from the mounts of gorgeousness?

وَدَلالٍ مُخَيِّمٍ في ذُرى الخِي

مِ وَحِجلُ مُغَّيَبٍ في الحِجالِ

The guide whose traces were lost in the valleys of Kha,

and a long-necked one hidden in the sand dunes,

وَمَهاً مِن مَهى الخُدورِ وَآجا

لِ ظِباءٍ يُسرِعنَ في الآجالِ

and a wild cow from the cattle of the camps,

and mountain does racing toward the termini,

عادَكَ الزَورُ لَيلَةَ الرَملِ مِن

رَملَةٍ بَينَ الحِمى وَبَينَ المِطالِ

called you on the night of the soft sand between

Himā and Mithāl. So the phantom did not visit you,

نَم فَما زارَكَ الخَيالُ وَلَ

كِنَّكَ بِالفِكرِ زُرتَ طَيفَ الخَيالِ

but in your thoughts you visited the phantom's image.
