May it gladden you, O scion—for it has gladdened me—
your being restored to health, a well-being sweet and sound.
May your life be long, your eye serene,
and may death’s assault be turned away from you.
I see hopes laughing, showing their front teeth,
smiling to reveal your splendid gifts.
Whenever the sun’s fire rises, it vies in glory
with the fiery rising of your radiant countenance.
You built in glory an edifice that rose high,
and through your glory’s height grew tall in bodily stature.
By spending your wealth on lofty pursuits, you grew rich,
for your soul needs no gain that such heights might yield.
From the fruits of my praise of you, there harvested for me
the tongue of gratitude—verses ripe for plucking.
I have offered them to you, though in my eyes they are
among the purest gifts throughout all days.
