Your love left my heart to spend the night famished,
and I departed the land of yearning and consuming grief.
Had estrangement from you not granted me refuge in its kindness,
by God, I would have sought the protection of distance against you.
You gave no heed to the burning pangs my heart had already endured;
had tears not driven them from it, my heart would have been scorched.
Far from that now—in youth and tender age I lived
heedless that one passion can make another be forgotten.
