A warbling bird's trilling filled the air

    As the branches softly swayed.

    A gazelle called to a moon-like belle,

Who shared her love though she delayed.

Two lovers sheltered 'neath bows that met above,

And between them love tightly sewed.

Each sipping from the other's lip one drops of love,

Coming together, then apart they flowed.

O sweet, warbling birds, enjoy yourselves,

But morning comes, and I'm forlorn.

Alas for the sorrow of parting, O son of Muhammad,

Parting's blade on lovers is worn.

I weep, though lightning brightly cracks the gloom,

And thunder from heaven loudly booms,

As youthful boughs are stirred and lit up,

And towns and wilds are arrayed in blooms.

The Pleiades, Iraq's adornment, shine bright,

Their brilliant tails bid sadness begone.

Maidens circle 'round and 'round the maypole

As Eid draws near and sorrows are gone.

With words like pearls I'll pave a road

To Iraq, where glory structured lays.

The Caliph raised his banner, dwarfing all,

    And David won undying praise.

My sir, untroubled, needs no defense,

No lord in might with yours compares.

In darkness with your name I traced,

My David, your deeds the best declare.

When asked where next I'll stray, I said

"The friend ofdew, and Father Solomon for sure."

Unbar my age-locked heart with your bounty,

Only your open hands have the cure.

Alive, your bounty lives, and when dead,

Its springs run dry, spent is your world.
