Some lands lie barren while others grow rich,

Some are blessed while others deprived.

Survey the regions - you will see them

Rise and fall like men, decay and thrive.

    وادٍ بِهِ صِفرٌ وَوادٍ مُفعَمُ

    Fortune circles them, favoring each in turn;

Without it, Prophethood would not have risen

To honor the Hijaz, nor the Message fly.

Thus the Caliphate, after long ages adrift,

Founded empires, though once a faint dream.

Through it we saw the Sacred House of God

As a bright star ruling the world's scheme.

Since Malik bore rule the blessed isle

Has shut its door against the clouds above.

Its villages are cloaked now in dust, and seem

Like stars in his darkness, extinguished of love.

Once a lush garden, but now laid open

To Hell, when its bliss left as if Hell came.

The air there is heavy, the exile heartsick

For home; that cleft is cleft with shame.

The separate tents were ruled by a king

Who would not abide lewdness or crime.

He walked with the folk yet kept majesty,

Bending to raise them, as was meet, sublime.

Noble, he knew; to honor him was right.

Base with them, he increased his esteem.

Enough, O sons of Amr ibn Ghanam!

You are the target of tongues, as I deem.

The glory of Rabi'a from ancient days

When Jusham's hand was its shield and defense.

They raid to conquer; conquest is their name.

They loot the lands, and take spoils immense.

Soon you will recall Malik's great deeds

When disaster strikes or ruin looms near.

Who then is pure, free of vice, now he has gone

And your abode forsaken, no more held dear?

Why do I see your soil so lifeless?

Why are your houses all in decay?

What kin are these that merit no tenderness?

What womb is this that pity does not sway?

Envy of their own has ulcered kinship,

An ancient wound no medicine can heal.

Thus Quraysh, whose minds once joined as one,

Their dreams united, purposes fused real,

Until Muhammad came, the Prophet, from their ranks

Bearing the Revelation midst their band.

Then their accord corroded and minds locked.

All turned stubbornly against his command.

Had they the scruple they feign, then never

Would they have stayed back from his advance.

Those are your ills, O Quraysh! Does the kin

Near to you not know and makeKnown your stance?

Sweet once his ways were, but you abandoned them

For what was bitter salt beneath the skin.

Until when you were ill, he prepared your cure.

Chastising cures: a wise man uses discipline.

I fear you sheathe the sword once drawn for blood.

Blood once spilt cries for vengeance ever stern.

    You tried to destroy his power, but it held fast;

Your sword glanced off, its notched edge firm.

Scorn cannot shake him. Think of days gone by

And past favors! See how blessings turn!

Feel remorse, if only remorse could mend

The anguish in your breast that you have earned!

If only one might come to him from us,

Or he would deign to take our blood-price fine!

Then those pleiades would not have bent their necks,

Those two stars, twins, would still serenely shine.

I have known since you allied against him

Naught remained for you but grief to reap.

I studied well the configuration of his stars:

The brilliant heavenly reader cannot misread.

From the first, when I saw his skies grow dark,

I have known what troubles would descend.

O Malik! All of Nizar knows full well

None like you has walked the earth, or will transcend.

When I saw you unharmed, joy stretched my hand.

At the sight, sorrow's vast shadow bent.

I smelled the scent of flowering Raḥba, the perfume

Of its soil, as the seas sent up their wild lament.

How many tyrants found there their last abode,

To sleep in its bosom, themselves ruined!

You hid your great deeds, but deeds will out

Though modesty cloak them. This cannot be rued.

Your excellence shines through, and virtue plain

For you - though the truth, guileless, needs no trim.

I praised you, for praise oils that noble bond.

I kept faith, for faith is trade that made life brim.

I gave thanks, for thanks are harvest, fecund, ripe.
