طَلَلَ الجَميعِ لَقَد عَفَوتَ حَميدا

وَكَفى عَلى رُزئي بِذاكَ شَهيدا

Everyone's vision deluded, for sure you've pardoned the praiseworthy Hamid

And for denouncing Ruzayy, that suffices as witness.

دِمَنٌ كَأَنَّ البَينَ أَصبَحَ طالِباً

دَمِناً لَدى آرامِها وَحُقودا

A blood-revenge as if separation became demanding

Blood from her tranquility and grudges.

قَرَّبتَ نازِحَةَ القُلوبِ مِنَ الجَوى

وَتَرَكتَ شَأوَ الدَمعِ فيكَ بَعيدا

You brought the wandering hearts closer through passion

And left the evil of tears in you distant.

خَضِلاً إِذا العَبَراتُ لَم تَبرَح لَها

وَطَناً سَرى قَلِقَ المَحَلِّ طَريدا

Degraded if the teardrops do not cease falling for her

And homeland the restless sought expelled.

أَمَواقِفَ الفِتيانِ تَطوي لَم تَزُر

شَرَفاً وَلَم تَندُب لَهُنَّ صَعيدا

The stances of gallants do not fold, did not visit

Glory and did not eulogize for them a place.

أَذكَرتَنا المَلِكَ المُضَلَّلَ في الهَوى

وَالأَعشَيَينِ وَطَرفَةً وَلَبيدا

You reminded us of the king gone astray in passion

And al-A'sha and Tarafa and Labid.

حَلّوا بِها عُقَدَ النَسيبِ وَنَمنَموا

مِن وَشيِها حُلَلاً لَها وَقَصيدا

They dissolved the ties of lineage and softly crooned

From her tattoo bracelets for her and ode.

راحَت غَواني الحَيِّ عَنكَ غَوانِياً

يَلبَسنَ نَأياً تارَةً وَصُدودا

My passion of life went from you passionately

Donning remoteness sometimes and aloofness other times.

مِن كُلِّ سابِغَةِ الشَبابِ إِذا بَدَت

تَرَكَت عَميدَ القَريَتَينِ عَميدا

Of every fully mature in youth, when she appeared

She left the chief of both encampments, a chief.

أولِعنَ بِالمُردِ الغَطارِفِ بُدَّنا

غيداً أَلِفنَهُمُ لِداناً غيدا

They were infatuated with polished libertines

A herd they befriended gentle, a herd.

أَحلى الرِجالِ مِنَ النِساءِ مَواقِعاً

مَن كانَ أَشبَهَهُم بِهِنَّ خُدودا

Does and goats on hillocks for them

Prey, their nights seeming to them amorous play.

فَاُطلُب هُدوءاً بِالتَقَلقُلِ وَاِستَثِر

بِالعيسِ مِن تَحتِ السُهادِ هُجودا

They inherited fatherliness and fortunes so they became

Bringers of ancestry on high and ancestry below.

مِن كُلِّ مُعطِيَةٍ عَلى عَلَلِ السُرى

وَخداً يَبيتُ النَومُ مِنهُ شَريدا

The souls' dens when the stars of Qa'adhab

Let loose the ghoul of chaos the accursed.

تَخدي بِمُنصَلِتٍ يَظَلُّ إِذا وَنى

ضُرَباؤُهُ حِلساً لَها وَقُتودا

Flowers when they rise over kidneys' veils

Are inauspicious, and if hidden, bring bliss.

جَعَلَ الدُجى جَمَلاً وَوَدَّعَ راضِياً

بِالهونِ يَتَّخِذُ القُعودَ قَعودا

You see none but a purposeful leader

Under the standard, and an agent with purpose.

طَبَلَت رَبيعَ رَبيعَةَ المُهمي لَها

فَوَرَدنَ ظِلَّ رَبيعَةَ المَمدودا

So they rushed to the dense, multiplied troop, and donned

Among them iron, in affairs iron.

بَكرِيِّها عَلَوِيَّها صَعبِيَّها ال

حِصنِيِّ شَيبانِيَّها الصِنديدا

And they walked before Abu Yazid and behind him

A walk that shakes the crumbling mountains.

ذَهلِيَّها مُرِّيَّها مَطَرِيَّها

يُمنى يَدَيها خالِدَ بنَ يَزيدا

Their lower flanks they shield with the flank of a stab

Of spear and uglier blow of thick-clubbed one.

نَسَبٌ كَأَنَّ عَلَيهِ مِن شَمسِ الضُحى

نوراً وَمِن فَلَقِ الصَباحِ عَمودا

You do not see the pedigrees white and pure

Except where you see the deaths black.

عُريانُ لا يَكبو دَليلٌ مِن عَمىً

فيهِ وَلا يَبغي عَلَيهِ شُهودا

He wore courage, it was for him

A foot accustomed early in boyhood to wound.

شَرَفٌ عَلى أولى الزَمانِ وَإِنَّما

خَلَقُ المَناسِبَ أَن يَكونَ جَديدا

Scarce valor and the valor of generosity

Compact, and the valor of innate disposition.

لَو لَم تَكُن مِن نَبعَةٍ نَجدِيَّةٍ

عَلوِيَّةٍ لَظَنَنتُ عودَكَ عودا

And if you see Abu Yazid in softness

And fervor the starter of a raid and repeat raider

مَطَرٌ أَبوكَ أَبو أَهِلَّةِ وائِلِ

مَلَأَ البَسيطَةَ عُدَّةً وَعَديدا

He feeds his pursuer the possessions of his wealth

And the lips of the swords a wound and vein.

أَكفاءَهُ تَلِدُ الرِجالُ وَإِنَّما

وَلَدَ الحُتوفُ أَساوِداً وَأُسودا

You'd be certain that from generosity is courage

That makes bloody, and that from courage is openhandedness.

رُبداً وَمَأسَدَةً عَلى أَكتادِها

لِبَدٌ تَخالُ فَليلَهُنَّ لُبودا

And if you let your eyes roam about his abodes

You find none but bounty and envious.

وَرِثوا الأُبُوَّةَ وَالحُظوظَ فَأَصبَحوا

جَمَعوا جُدوداً في العُلى وَجُدودا

And noble deeds the emancipation of craftsmen multiplied

If the plateau of the two Amayat is long lasting

وُقُرُ النُفوسِ إِذا كَواكِبُ قَعضَبٍ

أَردَينَ عِفريتَ الوَغى المَرّيدا

And whenever you resort to him, you attain his effort

And after the effort find in him increase.

زُهراً إِذا طَلَعَت عَلى حُجُبِ الكُلى

نَحَسَت وَإِن غابَت تَكونُ سُعودا

Ablaze from it the times, and perhaps

The times with others were stagnant.

ما إِن تَرى إِلّا رَئيساً مُقصَداً

تَحتَ العَجاجِ وَعامِلاً مَقصودا

May Yazid and Mazid and their father

And your father, your pillar in glory, endure

فَزِعوا إِلى الحَلَقِ المُضاعَفِ وَاِرتَدوا

فيها حَديداً في الشُؤونِ حَديدا

They preceded, seeing mention a righteous sequel

And passed esteeming praise eternity.

وَمَشَوا أَمامَ أَبي يَزيدَ وَخَلفَهُ

مَشياً يَهُدُّ الراسِياتِ وَئيدا

Verily the rhymes and endeavors never ceased

To be like order if it meets unmatched.

يَغشَونَ أَسفَحَهُم مَذانِبَ طَعنَةٍ

سَيحٍ وَأَشنَعَ ضَربَةٍ أُخدودا

It is essence, prose, so if you compile it

Into verse, it becomes necklaces and covenants.

ما إِن تَرى الأَحسابَ بيضاً وُضَّحاً

إِلّا بِحَيثُ تَرى المَنايا سودا

In every battlefield and every stand

They take from it obligation and covenants.

لَبِسَ الشَجاعَةَ إِنَّها كانَت لَهُ

قِدماً نَشوغاً في الصِبا وَلَدودا

So when the odes were not its sentinels

It was not pleased with it a witnessed scene.

بَأساً قَليلِيّاً وَبَأسَ تَكَرُّمٍ

جَمٍّ وَبَأسَ قَريحَةِ مَولودا

For that reason the first Arabs

Called this firmly constructed, delineated.

وَإِذا رَأَيتَ أَبا يَزيدٍ في نَدىً

وَوَغىً وَمُبدِئَ غارَةٍ وَمُعيدا

And with them glory rises only a glory

For which the purpose of the ode was fettered.

يَقري مُرَجّيهِ مُشاشَةَ مالِهِ

وَشَبا الأَسِنَّةِ ثُغرَةً وَوَريدا

So when the odes were not its guards

It was not pleased from it a scene witnessed.

أَيقَنتَ أَنَّ مِنَ السَماحِ شَجاعَةً

تُدمي وَأَنَّ مِنَ الشَجاعَةِ جودا

For that the first Arabs

Called this firmly constructed, delineated.

وَإِذا سَرَحتَ الطَرفَ حَولَ قِبابِهِ

لَم تَلقَ إِلّا نِعمَةً وَحَسودا

And glory rises with them only a glory

That had the bitterness of the ode fettered.

وَمَكارِماً عُتُقَ النِجارِ تَليدَةً

إِن كانَ هَضبُ عَمايَتَينِ تَليدا

وَمَتى حَلَلتَ بِهِ أَنالَك جُهدَهُ

وَوَجَدتَ بَعدَ الجُهدِ فيهِ مَزيدا

مُتَوَقِّدٌ مِنهُ الزَمانُ وَرُبَّما

كانَ الزَمانُ بآخَرينَ بَليدا

أَبقى يَزيدُ وَمَزيَدُ وَأَبوهُما

وَأَبوكَ رُكنَكَ في الفَخارِ شَديدا

سَلَفوا يَرَونَ الذِكرَ عَقباً صالِحاً

وَمَضَوا يَعُدّونَ الثَناءَ خُلودا

إِنَّ القَوافِيَ وَالمَساعِيَ لَم تَزَل

مِثلَ النِظامِ إِذا أَصابَ فَريدا

هِيَ جَوهَرٌ نَثرٌ فَإِن أَلَّفتَهُ

بِالشِعرِ صارَ قَلائِداً وَعُقودا

في كُلِّ مُعتَرَكٍ وَكُلِّ مَقامَةٍ

يَأخُذنَ مِنهُ ذِمَّةً وَعُهودا

فَإِذا القَصائِدُ لَم تَكُن خُفَراءَها

لَم تَرضَ مِنها مَشهَداً مَشهودا

مِن أَجلِ ذَلِكَ كانَتِ العَرَبُ الأُلى

يَدعونَ هَذا سُؤدُداً مَحدودا

وَتَنَدُّ عِندَهُمُ العُلى إِلّا عُلىً

جُعِلَت لَها مُرَرُ القَصيدِ قُيودا
