For what beloved is good advice and affection

When most people have no loyalty?

I see the days slandering me with no harm to them

Is there a defender against their misfortunes? Praise be!

This world does not obey us

And no being can escape its cycles

Glories are seized by the lowly

And the unique hero serves himself in it

Every relative is distant in affection

And every friend conceals hatred in his heart

Yet God has a heart impervious to sorrow

With continual bliss, undistracted by adversity

He commands me to seek glory through tribulation

But where is sublimity if effort does not assist me?

I yearn, though what I love is a lance and a sword

A curled lock and a breast of delicate slope

Oh what a heart laden with love!

Oh what tears staining my cheek!

I want every greatness from the days

Yet no lion resides between my ribs

No man who shuns carrying his sword

A wrap restraining him from ambition, is a youth

When the sword itself does not strike

The fault lies with the wielder, not the blade

    Around me are bands

Whose affection is hidden while their hatred appears

A man may live happy for a time

Though days once pained him, now he's their slave

No wealth except through gaining it

No riches for one without glory

Life is naught but joining bold comrades

    Heedless of misfortune or blessing

Roused one day to honor, they hasten

Called another day to raid, they race

How often on a day of rest

Sword and scabbard lay me down to sleep

If enemies seek me in a land

I escape, with only their dust on my trail

Had my lance willed, it would bar each pass

Where brigands and horsemen watch me

We raided at the dark of night

Driving the finest steeds into its breast

As though stars of night beneath their saddles

Plunged into the darkness on a moonless night

Each proud son repeats the stab

As though the blood of foes is honey in his mouth

He strikes until his sword lacks strength

And stabs until his arm lacks vigor

An exile, desiring only his might

Speaking just of what glory grants

    Fearing only his lance's swiftness

Seeking only what lions quest for

When an Arab is not like his sword

Fierce against foes, nobility disowns him

No east or west was too cramped

Except the hide too cramped for himself

When a man's wealth dwindles, so do his friends

Forsaking him along with charm and affection

To glance away from every lovely sight

    Distracted by estrangement and distance

Why should I accept the injustice of the days?

They know I'm neither coward nor degenerate

Men's eyes avoid me out of awe

As sore eyes avoid the dawn's sunshine

Dune ridges crossed me, their smooth slopes

Beyond the reach of grazing beasts or flowers

Their feet repel each other in the desert

To where glory, struggle and strife grow

She came to you with slackened reins

A rider who disappeared from sight

One like you, whose house never lacks company

    With guests departing and arriving

So grasp the glory you've earned

Your share is this honor and noble stock

A father you are, higher in merit and sublime

More resolute, though fire birthed the spark

No lightning and thunder your peer

Whose emblem is the white and spears

How many gashes you've struck in the enemy's chest

Dyeing your lance crimson thrust after thrust

Above the warring din, the blow of one raging

Nearly causes the Yemeni sword to ignite

Some men wish I were silenced

Were it not for our feud, they would not wish what they do

I praised them but my words were seen as ugly

Oh how many necks unfit for a necklace!

I renounced though my asceticism in life had cause

Unconvincing is the asceticism of unrealized hopes

Time and its people mean little to my heart

Though our souls and death seek us, are lost

I accept that the days do not kill me

While their woes remain distinct from my peers
