أَساقِيَتي كَأساً أَمَرَّ مِنَ الصَبرِ
وَمُحوِجَتي مِن صَفوِ عَيشٍ إِلى كَدَر
O you who pours for me a cup more bitter than aloes,
And drives me from the clarity of life into its murky distress,
وَكُنتُ عَزيزاً قَبلَ أَن أَعرِفَ الهَوى
فَأَلبَسَني ثَوبَ المَذَلَّةِ وَالصَغَر
I was mighty and dignified before I knew passion,
But it has clothed me in the robe of humiliation and abasement.
