قُلتُ لَدُنُّ شُجُّ أَوداجُهُ
لَيتَ دَمي دونَكِ مَسفوحُ
I said, as the jugular veins were slit,
Would that my blood were shed instead of yours,
وَكُنتُ مِنهُ بَدَلاً صالِحاً
في مُهجَتي تَحيا بِكِ الروحُ
And that I had been a fitting substitute for it,
For in my lifeblood, the soul lives only through you.
