Hamdan, why is it that you rage

At me, without a cause for anger?

If I have truly repented to God,

You come to me, shunning my presence.

For I have sworn a solemn oath,

A righteous vow, not to be belied,

By the Lord of Zamzam and the Basin,

And Safa and the pebbled valley of Muhassab,

That I shall not touch a young lad,

With delicate fingertips, dyed with henna.

So burst with grief at this news from me,

O son of the noble, pure-bred lineage.

For the sea has become my sole concern,

And the sea is more desirable and sweet.

And I have sworn that I shall never,

Upon the dry land, as long as I live, ride.

O branch of the Lion of the clan of Bakr,

Possessors of deeds refined and pure,

People of generosity and high glory,

    And memorable feats—so turn around!
