I favor most the hunting of the game,
With every hawk of wide and ample vest,
Wearing a gilded hood, compact and tight,
With striking head and beak of shearing edge,
A breast that glistens with a polished sheen,
Patterned like silk, with gem-like spots defined,
Against the cranes, a greedy, eager foe,
He spotted twenty in the tangled wood,
Then slipped clearly from his polished leash,
And swooped down falling like a flash of light,
Drawing his wings in for a frantic dash,
He singled out the leanest of the flock,
And struck it with a claw that grips and tears;
How many there we slew with broken necks,
How many in our house lie clipped and cleaned,
Ready for roasting fire and savory broth.
