كَسَرَ الحِبُّ نَشاطي

وَلَقَد كُنتُ نَشيطا

The beloved has shattered my spirit,

Though I was once so full of life.

جاءَني عَنهُ كَلامٌ

زادَني فيهِ قُنوطا

Word concerning him has reached me,

That has deepened my despair of him.

واضَياعاهُ أَمِثلي

يُرتَجى مِنهُ خَليطا

Oh, what a waste! Is one such as I

To be merely hoped for as a companion?

قُلتَ لا أَقرَبُ إِلّا

آلَ عَمروٍ أَو لَقيطا

You said, "I will not draw near to anyone

Except the kin of 'Amr or Laqit."

كَم رَأَينا عَرَبِيّا

تٍ يُواصِلنَ نَبيطا

Yet how many Arab women have we seen

Consorting with Nabateans?

لَو أَرَدتَ الوَصلَ لَم تَج

لِب مِنَ الفَخرِ شُروطا

Had you truly desired union, you would not have invoked

Such conditions born of boastful pride.
