September has passed, and the scorching heat has lifted,
And Sirius, the crossing star, has dimmed its fire.
So rise and impregnate the wine with water,
For the offspring born of their union is joy.
A birth for which no mother offers milk,
From a gestation where months are not counted.
When the goblets repeat their rounds among us,
A revolving firmament forms in our midst.
Its stars travel, now rushing, now loitering,
Shining from the east, and at times setting.
If the Pole Star does not set them in motion, we perish,
And in their rotations lies our resurrection.
I saw Al-Fadl achieving every excellence,
So that his likeness and peer became rare.
Abu al-Abbas never deemed praise too costly,
Nor was any abundance too much for him to give.
His soul was never divided within him,
That a counselor might judge between his views.
I welcomed the Spring in generosity and valor,
And in resolve when grave matters befall me.
