The neighbor has afflicted me, not the neighbor maid,
With the beauty of a face perfect as the full moon's halo.
I pass the night wasting away from passion for him,
As if I had been stung by a deadly scorpion.
It is torment enough to love one I do not see,
Though we dwell in the same quarter, the same lane.
I am the one burning in the fire of desire,
Alone, while other lovers are merely spectators.
My heart abstains from love, yet when at last
It loves one day, it brings a catastrophe.
Love has toyed with my heart just as
The cat toys with the mouse.
