I was seized by fever, yet sensed not your fire,

Until my visitors spoke of the ailment afflicting you.

Then I said: The fever would never have come to visit me,

Without a cause, save that it first had visited you.

And there is yet another sign by which this truth is known:

God granted me recovery the very moment He healed you.

Thus, if my soul and yours have come to such accord,

In this event and that, sharing in every state and hue,

Then be a mercy unto us—may my soul be your ransom—

And be not contrary to what the Lord of the Throne named you.

For you have known with certainty, or shall soon come to know,

What your love and memory have wrought within my heart.
