    بِأَن يُمسي وَلَيسَ لَهُ اِنتِشاءُ

    And a drinking companion who considers it a personal loss / To let the evening pass without intoxication,

    If you rouse him from a drunken slumber, / A single call from you is all he needs;

    He is not one to tell you, 'Leave me be,' / Nor to ask you, 'What is it you want?'

    But rather, 'Pour me a drink!' and he adds as well, / 'Serve it pure if fetching water wearies you.'

    وَلا مُستَخبِرٍ لَكَ ما تَشاءُ

    If the Noon prayer catches him, he prays it, / But he observes neither the Afternoon nor the Night prayer on time;

    He prays this one during the time of that one, / So all his prayers are forever merely making up for missed obligations.

    That man is Muhammad—may my soul be his ransom; / He is worthy of it, though such a sacrifice is too little for him.
