May God relieve me of my sight,

Just as my gaze has brought affliction upon me.

    Its infatuation burdens me

With beardless youths of perilous consequence.

Oh, the sorrow caused by an eye

That, by its glance, has reaped my ruin.

For if I reproach it for this,

    It refers me to Destiny.

It defeats me in argument, so I fall silent,

Unable to return a word, like a stone.

    O you who, regarding love,

    Possess no inclination of desire,

And who has not tasted the two types of passion:

The sweet honey and the bitter aloe.

You cast blame; yet by the One who saved

You from my longing and my brooding thoughts,

If only you had tasted, at times,

    The solitude of obsessive contemplation,

And passion had opened, by your own hands,

    Various hues of sorrowful lessons,

While you lay under its wrath,

With a heart unable to endure patience,

Then you would have known that love

Seizes with the grasp of the Omnipotent.

For I am concealing a matter

That places me in grave danger.

    Alas! The madness of love

Toyed with me in my youth,

It aged me without the years of old age,

And scattered gray throughout my hair.

So say to the one I desire—

Though how can one speak to the moon?

May you be ransomed! How long will this figure

Cry out among mankind because of you?
