What have I to do with the chiding women?
They embellished vain trifles for me.
Rushing forth from every path,
Casting blame upon my mistress concerning me.
They command me to let go,
To cast my very life from my hands,
And that is something I shall never accept,
Not until the moment of death.
By God, the Revealer of Taha,
And the Mount, and the Scattering Winds,
By Alif Lam Ra, Sad, and Qaf,
And the Gathering, and the Sent Forth winds,
And by the Lord of Hud and Nun,
And the Light, and the Soul-Pluckers,
I have never sought to leave you, my love,
Even if you do not comply with my desire.
Oh, woe is me! What is this thing
Dwelling between my heart and my throat?
A burning anguish that cannot be quenched,
Fluttering wildly within my ribs.
I am the tormented one; who is there for me
To pity my endless complaining?
He whose tears are visible without,
While sighs burn hidden within.
I am afflicted with one who actively seeks
To cause me pain in every matter.
O you who ask about my tribulation,
Gaze upon my glancing eyes.
Passion is revealed in the stillness
Of the lover, and in his movements.
I swore by the dancing camels,
In the vast depths of the wilderness,
And by those driven with sacrificial offerings,
Destined to be pierced in the throat,
And by the gathering at Muzdalifah,
And the throngs upon Arafat:
If you were to demand the taking of my soul,
I would truly will my own demise.
Woe is me from the fire of longing,
Rising up to choke my very throat,
Causing the eye to pour forth tears,
Overflowing like the floods of the Euphrates.
And a companion who was with me,
Suspicious regarding my passion,
Who understood nothing of my state,
Save to accuse me of my faults.
So as we walked in the evening,
Wandering through the pathways,
Suddenly it was said: "A sun of the day
Resides in these fragrant quarters!"
I said: "A sun indeed, by my Lord,
That has dispelled the darknesses,
And has drained the water of my eyes,
And caused my heavy sighs to rise."
For in love there are tribulations,
One following upon another;
At times they result in joy,
And at others, in bitter regrets.
