Quench my thirst, son of Udhaynah
Pour for me, O Ibn Udhayn,
With a draught of date wine
Of the vintage of Zarajun,
Quench me until you see in me
Pour for me until you witness,
An ecstasy other than madness
A rapture distinct from insanity,
Coffee that all eyes have ignored
A wine that has been hidden from
Gazing at the harbinger of death
The prying eyes of uncertain Fate,
Freed in the world until she is
Aged deep within the cask until
As delicate as my faith
It grew as transparent as my faith,
Then stirred and turned above
Then, when mixed, it swirled to form
Like eyes filled with passion
Upon its surface, shapes like eyes,
Gazing at us, her eyes haven’t
Pupils that gaze intently at us,
Hardened with disdain
Unbounded by the veil of lids,
Gold that fruits pearls
Liquid gold that bears fruit of pearls
At every hour and moment
At every moment, time and again,
In the hands of one whose legs are clad
Borne by a cupbearer, clad in
In a dress of jasmine
A garment woven of jasmine,
And at her ears are
And tucked behind his two ears
Rose pendants of Azra’een
Are two blooms of calendula,
Perfect in beauty and charm
The perfection of form and elegance,
Unique in coyness and flirtation
And unique in his wanton play,
Sing to me, son of Udhaynah
Sing to me, O Ibn Udhayn,
To the sound of the tambourine
And make merry at al-Matirun.
