1. أَنّى تُشافُ المَغاني وَهيَ أَدراسُ

    كَأَنَّ باقِيَها في العَينِ أَطراسُ

    How can the dwellings be beheld when they are obliterated traces? As if their remnants, to the eye, are erased parchments.

    They were ravaged by all that ravaged their likes, leaving them deaf and mute, save for the echo.

  2. أَزرى بِها كُلُّ ما أَزرى بِمُشبِهِها

    فَهُنَّ إِلّا الصَدا صُمٌّ وَأَخراسُ

    Desire for what they hold did not enslave you, save that the people there stood mighty against you.

    And the night wraps its cloak around me, with no companion to converse with but affliction and despair.

  3. فَما اِستَرَقَّكَ فيما عِندَها طَمَعٌ

    إِلّا اِستَعَزَّكَ فيما عِندَها الناسُ

  4. وَقَد يَضُمُّ عَلَيَّ اللَيلُ نُقبَتَهُ

    وَلا مُسامِرَ إِلّا السوءُ وَالباسُ
