1. أَتَأذَنُ لي فَدَيتُكَ بِالسَلامِ

    عَلَيكَ وَفي القَليلِ مِنَ الكَلامِ

    Do you permit me—may I be your ransom—to offer a greeting,

    Upon you, and to share but a few words?

  2. أَتَغدو لِلحَديثِ إِلى فَقيهٍ

    وَتَنظُرُ في الحَلالِ وَفي الحَرامِ

    You go out early to converse with a jurist,

    And to consider the lawful and the forbidden;

  3. فَهَل حَدَّثتَ عَن قَتلي بِشَيءٍ

    إِلى الفُقَهاءِ يا بَدرَ التَمامِ

    Did you then speak at all regarding my killing

    To the jurists, O full moon of perfection?
