May rain water places other than al-Alyā and al-Sanad,

And other than the ruins of Mayy in al-Jarad,

O downpour of the clouds, if you have already

Bestowed rain upon al-Liwa once, then do not return.

Do not water a town which, were the lands enumerated,

Would count only as an excess of misery,

Where if I take precautions against the raven,

My escape from it leads only to the shrike,

In a place where the winds bring nothing to

Your ears except the bleating of stunted sheep.

Far better to me than your bending over

With a stone, hammering away at a tent-peg,

Is a sprig of sweet basil resting upon an ear,

And the passage of a wine-cup to a mouth by hand.
