عَتَبَت عَلَيكَ مَحاسِنُ الخَمرِ

أَم غَيَّرَتكَ نَوائِبُ الدَهرِ

The charms of wine reproached you,

The charms of wine have leveled blame at you,

Or did the calamities of fate change you?

Or have the dark calamities of time estranged you?

فَصَرَفتَ وَجهَكَ عَن مُعَتَّقَةٍ

تَفتَرُّ عَن دُرٍّ وَعَن شَذَرِ

So you turned your face away from a beloved

That you have turned your face from vintage draughts,

Who shines like a pearl and radiates light.

Which smile, revealing pearls and beads of gold,

يَسعى بِها ذو غُنَّةٍ غَنِجٌ

مُتَكَحِّلُ اللَحَظاتِ بِالسِحرِ

A wealthy man of joy pursues her,

Served by a playful youth of lilting voice,

With kohl-lined eyes full of magic,

Whose glances are adorned with magic's kohl,

وَنَسيتَ قَولَكَ حينَ تَمزِجُها

فَتُريكَ مِثلَ كَواكِبِ النِسرِ

And you forgot your words when you would mix it

And you forgot your words when mixing it,

And it would show you like the stars of the swooping eagle.

As it displayed the sparkling Eagle's stars?

لا تَحسَبَنَّ عُقارَ خابِيَةٍ

وَالهَمَّ يَجتَمِعانِ في صَدرِ

Don't think that the potion of a vanishing beauty

Do not believe the spirit of the cask

And care can gather in one chest.

And sorrow can unite within one breast.
