أَضرَمتَ نارَ الحُبِّ في قَلبي

ثُمَّ تَبَرَّأتَ مِنَ الذَنبِ

You ignited the fire of love within my heart,

Then declared yourself innocent of the sin.

حَتّى إِذا لَجَّجتُ بَحرَ الهَوى

وَطَمَّتِ الأَمواجِ في قَلبي

Until, when I plunged into the deep sea of passion,

And the waves overwhelmed my heart,

أَفشَيتُ سِرّي وَتَناسيتَني

ما هاكَذا الإِنصافُ يا حِبّي

I revealed my secret, yet you feigned to have forgotten me;

This is not justice, oh my beloved.

هَبنِيَ لا أَسطيعُ دَفعَ الهَوى

عَنّي أَما تَخشى مِنَ الرَبِّ

Grant that I am powerless to repel this passion

From myself—do you not fear the Lord?
