رُدّا عَلَيَّ الكَأسَ إِنَّكُما

لا تَدرِيانِ الكَأسَ ما تُجدي

Return the cup to me, for the two of you

Know not what the cup avails.

خَوَّفتُماني اللَهَ رَبَّكُما

وَكَخيفَتيهِ رَجائُهُ عِندي

You have frightened me with God, your Lord,

Yet equal to my fear of Him is my hope.

لا تَعذُلا في الراحِ إِنَّكُما

في غَفلَةٍ عَن كُنهِ ما تُسدي

Do not blame me for the wine, for you remain

In heedlessness of the essence it confers.

لَو نِلتُما ما نِلتُ ما مُزِجَت

إِلّا بِدَمعِكُما مِنَ الوَجدِ

Had you attained what I have attained, it would not be mixed

Save with your own tears born of ecstasy.

هاتا بِمِثلِ الراحِ مَعرِفَةً

بِلَطافَةِ التَأليفِ وَالوُدِّ

Bring forth something like wine in its wisdom,

In the subtlety of its composition and love.

ما مِثلُ نُعماها إِذا اشتَمَلَت

إِلّا اشتِمالُ فَمٍ عَلى خَدِّ

There is no likeness to its bliss when it embraces,

Save the embrace of a mouth upon a cheek.

إِن كُنتُما لا تَشرَبانِ مَعي

خَوفَ العِقابِ شَرِبتُها وَحدي

If you two will not drink with me

For fear of punishment, I shall drink it alone.
