Wake your boon companion, for he has nodded off,
To serve you a cup in the lingering darkness of dawn,
Pure wine, as though its radiant beams
Were a burning torch in the hand of its drinker,
From a vintage whose vine was chosen
By Chosroes in 'Anah, where he planted it.
It leaves the young man in such a state
That his tongue seems struck with muteness;
He is called, so he attempts to lift his head,
But the moment he raises it, it droops back down.
He who serves it to you is clad in a tunic,
Beguiling the soul and hurrying those who delay,
With languid eyelids, as if he were
A gazelle of the meadows when it grows drowsy.
Imam Muhammad has become
A light for the faith from which illumination is drawn;
He inherited the Caliphate from five before him,
And as the noblest sixth, he completed their count.
The full moons weep at the beauty of his laughter,
While the sword laughs whenever he frowns.
