Drink and serve the beloved, O cupbearer
Drink, and pour for the beloved, O cupbearer,
And serve me what remains of his cup
And serve me the rest of his remaining cup.
And serve him what I deliberately leave
Then serve him the remnant that I leave behind,
In the cup, without regret
Left within the goblet by design, unsparingly.
I drink from his remainder and he drinks from
I drink from his surplus, and he drinks from mine—
My remainder, so has done every lover
Such is the deed of every yearning lover.
You came as a messenger but became our cupbearer
You came as a messenger, yet became our cupbearer;
Greetings from the sender and from the bearer
Hail to you as envoy and as pouring hand.
