Pour for me the forbidden draught before the lawful,
And spare me the talk of effaced ruins.
For true life lies in the early pursuit of wine,
And an intoxication that endures through every state.
The perfection of its joy requires a cupbearer,
Handsome of face, radiant in beauty.
If his face were to appear as the sun circled above,
You would say: two lights fashioned from a single mold.
So pour me the wine of delicate raiment,
That obliterates from me all memory of the ruins.
