O Abu al-Abbas, refrain from your blame,
And leave aside deep speech and wordy game.
For by the life of the one we both adore,
The Month of Fasting has shaken me to the core.
It killed my wanton wit, destroyed my play,
And swept the wine-cup from my palms away.
If you could see me where the pillars rise,
Pacing while the Imam's call fills the skies,
You’d know I have tormented a soul within,
Marked by the habits and traces of sin.
For O how many cheeks I’ve kissed of old,
With bites and sips and embraces bold.
