هَذا مَقالٌ سَمِجُ

عَلَيكَ فيهِ حَرَجُ

This is a tasteless speech,

For which you bear the blame.

تَقتُلُني ظُلماً وَلَم

تَثبُت عَلَيَّ الحُجَجُ

You slay me unjustly, though no

Proof has been established against me.

أَنتَ غَزالٌ غَنِجٌ

بِهِ يَتيهُ الغَنَجُ

You are a flirtatious gazelle,

In whom coquetry itself takes pride.

قالوا فَصِفهُ قُلتُ في الجَب

هَةِ مِنهُ بَرَجُ

They said, "Describe him!" I said, "In the

Forehead of his, there is a striking width."

قالوا فَزِد قُلتُ وَفي ال

وَجنَةِ مِنهُ بَهَجُ

They said, "Say more!" I said, "And in the

Cheek of his, there is a radiant joy."

قالوا فَزِد قُلتُ وَفي ال

عَينَينِ مِنهُ دَعَجُ

They said, "Say more!" I said, "And in the

Eyes of his, there is intense blackness."

قالوا فَزِد قُلتُ وَفي ال

أَسنانِ مِنهُ فَلَجُ

They said, "Say more!" I said, "And in the

Teeth of his, there is a charming gap."

قالوا فَزِد قُلتُ وَفي ال

كَشحَينِ مِنهُ دَمَجُ

They said, "Say more!" I said, "And in the

Waist of his, there is a sleek smoothness."

قالوا فَزِد قُلتُ لَهُم

أَكثَرُ مِن ذا سَمِجُ

They said, "Say more!" I said to them,

"Anything more than this is tasteless!"
