When the camel enters the empty desert of my patience

Among the seamstresses' awls and needles,

If you tie me down in a tavern,

My bond will be to a wine-server.

And if you want me to go on Hajj, my pilgrimage

Is to drinking wine in the ruins.

    It eliminates my worries, shining,

    And restores my broken vitality.

Wine makes us self-sufficient, needing nothing else,

Not even the company of handsome young men.

My boon companion is the vintner, killer swordsman that he is,

Wherever wine is drunk in the ruins.

He gives us the bottle gently,

Blessed is he who pours it from its veins.

Happily I say to him, "Sate me,

Even if only with fermented barely brew!"

    For wine tastes good only

With the sweat of exertion and pederasty.

And say to the taxman, the last time we meet,

If that should be on the Straight Path:

"I have made my pilgrimage to be my uncle,

And my bond forever only wine!"
