يا ربّ كم وإلى كم

أمشي ويركبُ غيري

O Lord, how much and for how long

Must I walk while others ride?

ما إن رضيتُ بهذا

يا ربُّ منكَ بخير

I have surely not accepted this,

O Lord, as a kindness from You.

لا أبتغي منكَ طرفاً

رضيتُ منكَ بعَير

I do not seek a thoroughbred steed from You;

I would be content with a mere donkey.

ولو تشا يا إلهي

حملتُ رحلي وأيري

But if You will it so, O my God,

I shall carry my saddlebag and my prick,

صيّرتُ ذا في غلافٍ

والرِجل في جوفِ سيرِ

Stowing the latter in a sheath,

And my foot in a sandal strap.
