Bring forth the wine, and give me wine to drink.

Do you not see how the cock has crowed?

Night has turned away within its encampment,

departing, while morning has shone forth.

    إِنّي إِلَيها أَصبَحتُ مُرتاحا

    So put the cup to use, and give me virgin wine to drink;

for I awoke this morning eager for it.

A brimming, unmixed cup—as though it carried

a lamp toward the mouths of those who drink.

It is brought to us like khalūq perfume in a goblet—

the fragrance of khalūq mingled with apple—

from the hand of a girdled Coptic woman.

We make it the key to the morning draught.

Out of her sauciness, she says to the company:

“By God, do not hold back the goblets!”
