O people, have mercy on me
O people, have mercy upon me,
And walk with me to Him
And guide my steps slowly toward him.
Speak to Him calmly
Speak to him with gentle calm,
Do not make it difficult for Him
And do not press him too hard.
Speak to Him today, He will be pleased
Speak to him today, that he may be pleased
With a prisoner in His hands
With a captive held fast in his hands.
If you saw Him walking
If only you saw him when he walks,
With eyes cast down
With the languid arch of his brow,
In a wrap He wore
In a garment he has artfully wound,
Then lowered His gaze
Letting its two ends trail down,
You would say this grace, truly
You would say: "This is true destruction,"
Is not what we are upon
"Not the life that we knew before."
