Quench my thirst, O son of dusty complexion
Pour for me, O son of Adham,
And take me as a son to you
And take me as a son of yours.
Give me to drink it pure
Pour me the vintage, pure and old,
Born before Adam's creation
That came before the birth of Adam.
It existed while naught did but
For it existed when nothing was,
The earth and the heavens above
Save for the earth and the sky above.
It saw time grow from infancy
It witnessed Time as a rising youth,
To tottering old age worn
And as an elder, worn by age.
It's a free spirit parted
It is a spirit, refined and free,
From flesh and blood
That has parted from flesh and blood.
Give it me to drink and sing
Pour it, and sing me a melody,
In your sweetest voice blessings untold
A foreign air—may you be blessed—
No words of blame or rebuke
Not describing the traces of ruins,
Shall describe it, not at all
Nor scaring away the bird of doom.
