You scolded Abu Muslim, so detain him,
You have run wild, Abu Muslim, so check your rein,
And lessen your haughty gaze,
And curb that gaze of haughty disdain.
And do not be fooled by riding the litter,
Do not be deluded by the bay steed you ride,
And whatever fine clothes you wear,
Nor the fine attire in which you take pride.
And your walking proudly in the middle of the courtyard,
Your strutting with vanity through the open court,
Even if it is said this is the man of the sitting room,
Though 'Master of the Assembly' is your report.
And the words of commanders are like the prince’s decree,
The couriers announcing the Emir's decree,
With scrolls sealed by the general,
And the sealing of scrolls with authority.
And how many we have seen obeyed here,
For how many have we seen obeyed in this hall,
Who became disgraced from the sitting room.
Who became the most abject and humbled of all.
